Janani Krishnan-Jha is thrilled to be part of Survivor 45 and hailed it as one of her childhood dreams.
Speaking with EW, Janani shared that “Growing up as a kid who always had her head in an adventure novel, I’ve always dreamed of getting to embark on an epic quest of my own someday. The first time I watched Survivor, I knew that this was the quest I had been waiting for. I’ve always looked up to the people who played this game — they’re risk takers, strong leaders who think on their feel and adapt quickly to obstacles; they embody the qualities I strive to have in my life. Having the opportunity to play this game is not one I take lightly, they say this game changes and challenges you, and I am ready to be challenged.”
Janani is adaptable and has competed in “competitive punning, debate, the music industry — the same way: first observing quietly and then fitting myself into the gaps to carve out my own space.” She believes these qualities will come in handy for her to ensure her win this season.
Talking about life experiences that prepared her, Janani shared that she turned down early admission to Harvard Law School in order to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter.
“My entire life I’d been preparing for a legal career because up to that point, I felt that’s what was expected of me. I faced pressure from my family and community to follow a certain path, and it wasn’t until a couple of years ago I realized I was running out of time to live life on my own terms,” she added. “Moving to LA and trying to start a music career felt a lot like starting over — I was coming into this cutthroat industry with no experience, and I had to learn the ropes extremely quickly. That experience reminds me a lot of what my fellow castaways and I will do.”
As for her winning contestant that she can relate to Janani named Parvati and hailed her as her role model. Then a non-winner was Maryanne for “how she lay low and let people discount her as a threat until the end, when she revealed herself to be a strategic mastermind with an almost mathematically methodical understanding of the game’s dynamics. I’ll be aiming for a similar position early on in the game — not running away from my loud personality and shrouding my observations of other players until the right moment.”
Talking about alliance partners and the attributes they require, Janani added, “It’s also important to me that my allies are comfortable following the natural ebb and flow of the game; not playing too hard when you don’t have to but still being capable of bold moves when the time calls for it.”
Ahead of the premiere, J Maya proclaimed, “Little life update: I got to go on an adventure I’ve been dreaming about since I was a kid!!!!! You can watch me this fall on Survivor 45.”
Janani Krishnan-Jha Job
Janani Krishnan-Jha is an aspiring Indian-American musician who also happens to be equally smart. She goes by the stage name J Maya. She released her debut single Achilles Heel, which generated over a million worldwide streams within a month of its release in January 2021.
Moreover, she also signed to Expand Music as their second artist after the hugely successful Conan Gray and is in discussions with the world’s biggest labels about a record deal. In 2022, she also released an EP titled Poectic License aptly named Maya making the worlds she creates entirely her own.

Harini Krishnan and Vikas Jha are the parents of Survivor contestant Janani Krishnan-Jha. Her parents married at Malibu Temple in Los Angeles amidst family and friends. In June 2023, they celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary.
Her mom Harini is an Indian American Democratic Organizer who is passionate about Gender Equity, Civil Rights, Public Education and Arts, and in particular, about electing more women and women of color to all levels of office.
A former Lead Volunteer Organizer for the Presidential Campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris in California in 2019, Harini co-founded NorCal Joyful Warriors for Joe and Kamala in early 2020, was elected as a Biden Delegate to the 2020 Democratic National Convention, and was featured in several videos at the historic convention. Harini was also a founding member of Kamala Harris For the People South Asian Finance Council and a member of the National Finance Committee of both VP Harris and President Biden’s Presidential Campaigns.
Harini holds a Bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), a Masters’s Degree in International Public Administration from the University of Southern California (USC), and is currently enrolled in the Harvard Kennedy School’s Public Leadership Program.
Talking about her biggest inspiration, Janani mentioned her grandmother Annapurna Krishnan. The Californian artist gushed, “My grandmother, my Paatti. When she was 16, she climbed Mt. Kanchenjunga with Tenzing Norgay (one of the first people to summit Mr. Everest), becoming the first South Indian woman in history to do so. For her bravery, she was awarded the ice axe medal by the Indian government. While the achievement itself is extraordinary, her unwillingness to accept constraints others placed on her is what truly inspires me.”
Vikas is a founder and ceo at Radiance Commerce. Before that, he worked at Google as Director of Engineering, Display Advertising. He attended the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and UCAL where he earned his MS and PhD in computer science.
Janani has one sister named Abhaya Krishnan-Jha. She worked as a Curriculum Developer and Program Head at ImmuneCraft Summer Program. Abhaya graduated from University of Southern California in 2022.
