In order to appeal to Baby Boomers, the reality dating program “The Bachelor” is redefining itself by adding some spice. This time, the main character is a 72-year-old widower and retired restaurateur Gerry Turner from Hudson, Indiana, who is looking for love and wants to settle down.
One of the two ladies from the DC region vying for his attention Joan Vassos, a private school administrator, is among the 22 golden hopefuls vying for his affection.
Her bio states “Joan is really something special. She has four kids and two grandkids and is looking for love again after losing her husband of 32 years to pancreatic cancer. The other lady is 60-year-old Nancy Hulkower, a retired interior designer from Alexandria, Virginia, and the wife of a prominent attorney.
Joan Vassos Ex-Husband
Joan Vassos was once married to her late husband John Vassos. They were reportedly married for 32 years.
John, a Salisbury University alumnus, was born on November 27, 1961, in Washington, DC, to Elaine and the late Nicholas Vassos. He was the owner and operator of CapX Solutions and BCE Corporation.
John had a close connection to St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Bethesda, Maryland, and he had been a lifelong member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, D.C. He cherished time spent with his family and friends as well as the beach, football, and coaching.
John played cards with his “Greek uncles” a lot of afternoons, and the stories about who cheated more are still hotly contested. While he fought his battle with cancer, they even scared the oncology unit at Sibley by playing cards in the cramped infusion rooms.
John passed away on 18 January 2021 at the age of 59 after a hard-fought two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was also survived by his sister Katina Vassos of Washington, DC.

Joan’s other daughter Allison is the president of Itty Bitty Boutique. She attended University of Maryland Global Campus. She is 29 years old.
