John Sundahl Family

John Sundahl is the son of Clarence Sundahl.

Clarence was the oldest of three children. He tried to join the U.S. Army but they kept sending him home because he was expected to help support the family after their father had died in 1938. Instead, Clarence became an engineer and worked with the Bureau of Reclamation, first in Bismarck, ND, and later in Washington, D.C.

However, Clarence’s two younger brothers George and Clifford joined the army. George set his sights on joining the Lutheran ministry. After graduating salutatorian from Opheim High School in the far reaches of northern Montana, he attended Luther College in Iowa and began his ministerial studies. But the war soon came calling and rather than a minister, George became a tank commander.

His tank battalion supported the 34th Infantry Division in their first and second attempts to cross the Rapido River in Italy and was some of the first units to arrive at the strongly held citadel of Monte Casino in early 1944. George was killed on May 28, 1944, just days before the American Army marched triumphantly into Rome.

The youngest brother, Clifford, served in the 70th Infantry Division and landed with them at Marseilles in late 1944, then fought their way up the Rhone Valley and finally into Germany before Clifford was killed on March 14, 1945, in fighting near the Saar River. The Sundahl brothers are buried today, side by side, at the Lorraine American Cemetery in France.

John spoke to the writer of the book Brothers In Arms and says that his dad spoke little of his only brothers lost in the war, he did often mention “how hard they worked, how poor they were, and how much they were part of the community.” The writer of the book Kevin Callahan did research on 280 sets of brothers and John’s uncles were in page 291.

“I was stunned at the number of brothers that were killed during WWII and I was very happy to help him in any way possible,” John said about his contribution and the book. “I did not know that they (uncles George and Clifford Sundahl) were buried together in France until Kevin told me.”

“Mostly what I was thinking about when we were going through the photos is what my grandmother, their mother, must have gone through to have someone knock on the door twice,” John added. “By then they had instituted the policy that a family’s last son couldn’t enlist, so every time my dad would sign up, they’d kick him out.”
