Kelly Curtis was born to her parents John Curtis and Debbie Smith Curtis. Coming from a family of athletes, she thrived in the sports field environment.
So, John wasn’t surprised when Kelly made the Olympics on her last chance. “I knew when she was going on her final run at St. Moritz that she’d come up with a great performance,” John revealed to NJ. “One thing about her playing basketball back in high school if you were an opposing player you didn’t want to see her on the line with a minute to go. I would wonder why she’d be clanging the ball off the rim in the middle of the game and she would just look at me. But she would process the importance of the event and come through in the end.”

John Curtis’s background in sports was one of the reasons why his daughter took sports early on. John and his wife were very supportive when Kelly jumped from one sport to another.
Kelly started as a track and field while in high school and excelled in it. Her Springfield track coach had suggested she try Bobsled which she had thought of as a joke at first but joined in 2013.
From there, she discovered a skeleton and she loved it.
John shared with NJ.com, “She had worked her way up to the number three two-woman bobsled team in the country and had been in a couple of competitions, and I’m thinking she might just be in the Olympics. Then she said ‘I think I’m gonna stop bobsled and start training for the skeleton.”
John though unfamiliar with the sport did know that “you go down headfirst” in that game. He added, “So her mother and I just gave her our best wishes and I told her to keep chasing her dream.”
