Emergency responders who were sent to the Nevadan Black Rock Desert in response to a call about a man who was unresponsive found it challenging to enter and exit the region due to the severe weather conditions. On-site CPR was performed, but by the time emergency responders got there, the man—later identified as 32-year-old Leon Reece—had already been pronounced dead.
Leon’s death’s cause hasn’t been made public as of yet, but Pershing County Sheriff Sgt. Nathan Carmichael told the Reno Gazette-Journal that it didn’t seem to be tied to the weather.
Burning Man 2023’s organizers declined a request for security from the Nevada National Guard as the events took place.
Marian, the CEO of the company at the time told NBC News that there was “no cause for panic.” “We’ve made it really clear that we do not see this as an evacuation situation,” Marian explained. She added that everyone made “such a fuss” and said: “We’ve made it really clear that we do not see this as an evacuation situation. The water is drying up.”
Although no official statement denying the existence of the 2024 Burning Man event has been made, details have not yet been made public.
