Some divorces as just circumstances. Take a look at the late campaigner Vicky Phelan. Despite ending her relationship with her husband Jim Phelan, the two stayed together for their children.

Meet Jim Phelan, Vicky Phelan Husband
Jim Phelan and Vicky Phelan ended their marriage in 2017. According to the campaigner, there was nobody else involved in their decision to separate, they just simply “grew apart.” She added, “Nobody had an affair. It’s just circumstances.”
Explaining furthermore, Vicky said, “There was too much thrown at us throughout our married life really. The s**t hit the fan within six months of being married when my pregnancy went haywire and we’ve been battling stuff ever since and you can’t keep doing that. You just can’t.”
Their divorce came after Vicky was first diagnosed with cancer. But before it returned years later, they felt the children had been through enough, and decided to live as a family but not as a couple. “We made a decision the kids have enough on their plate without their parents separating but we’re no longer together as a couple,” she explained.
Surprisingly, they got along as friends, and life was even better; especially for their kids. And why wouldn’t they? Nobody did anything wrong! The campaigner also confessed that if they weren’t getting along the setup would not work or be healthy, but she was happy they made the decision before her cancer returned.
“It’s just as well we had everything ironed out before everything happened last year because it would have been much harder to do in the public eye. We’d already made that decision just before my cancer came back,” she added.
Sadly, this fighter who exposed a cervical cancer screening scandal died in November 2022, at the age of 48.
“It is with an immense burden of grief, that earlier today we bade our final farewell to our beloved Vicky. She was the heart & soul of our family unit & her passing will leave a void in all our lives, that at this point seems impossible to fill. We cherish the memories of a loving wife, mother, daughter & sister, whose ability to deal with the struggles of life has inspired not only ourselves, but an entire nation,” Jim and his kids wrote a tribute to their dearest departed soul.
For those who don’t know, Vicky was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. But it seems the doctors made a mistake during her diagnosis and no one told her about it until 2017. A year later, she discovered the cancer was terminal.
Naturally, she sued the hospital and won a settlement of €2.5 million.
Vicky And Jim Phelan Kids
Jim and Vicky Phelan share two kids named Amelia and Darragh Phelan. They were born on August 30, 2005, and February 27, 2011, respectively.
According to Vicky, dying wasn’t the problem. Rather it was the thought of leaving her children behind. “That’s what breaks my heart,” she added.
“I know that the day will come that is my last day. My last sunrise, my last summer,” she continued. And then I will be at peace. My ashes will be scattered in the water, on the silver sands of the beach at Doughmore,” the campaigner got emotional.
Also, during her clinical trial in Maryland, she missed Amelia’s 16th birthday when she promised that she won’t miss another birthday because of treatment. “That is something that I am no longer willing to sacrifice. These moments and occasions are too precious,” she added.
Sadly, Amelia’s 17th was the last she got to celebrate.

Jim Phelan was a private man. But reports had that he was a lecturer of economics at the University of Limerick.
On the other hand, his late wife Vicky dedicated her remaining life to shedding light on HSE outsourced screening to unapproved laboratories in the UK and US, failed to keep track of them, and had an inadequate system for responding to screening errors.
Her actions, particularly in not signing a confidentiality agreement at that particular time outside the steps of the high court, will live long in memories as an example of someone who stood up against the system and the normal conventions.
