It’s scary when a family member is diagnosed with cancer. However, this wasn’t the case for the John Metchies III family. This Houston Texans wide receiver was diagnosed with APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia) in July 2022, and luckily, it was the most curable form of Leukemia.

Who Are John Metchie III Family Members?
John Metchie III comes from a family of six — his parents, John Metchie Jr and Joyce Metchie, himself, and his three siblings — whom he credits for everything he is today.
It was with them the football rookie emigrated to Canada at age 6. Together, they’ve struggled for better economic and educational opportunities, and largely thanks to his mother’s efforts, they’ve come a long way.
So, in light of that, John’s family is certain that they will make it past this hurdle just like they’ve always done. “I am currently receiving great medical care, am in good spirits and I expect to make a recovery at a later point in time,” the footballer assured his fans as well.
However, as a result of this diagnosis, John believed he would likely not be playing football for the 2022 season. “My main focus will be on my health and recovery. Thank you in advance for your support and well-wishes. I cannot wait to come back stronger than ever. God bless,” he added.
On July 23, 2022, Houston Texans even placed the star on the active/non-football illness list.
Prior to this, Metchie had 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns in season 2021 at Alabama. Sadly, he then tore his ACL in the SEC championship game in December and had to take a break.
Another reason, John’s family was certain of his recovery was because he gave them a heart attack once before too. Back when the 14-year-old John joined Saint James School in Hagerstown, he suffered a hard hit in the chest that caused significant swelling and increased heart rate.
Fortunately, the swelling went down. But further scans reveal that John had an enlarged heart resulting from increased training which ended his dream of making it to the NFL.

John Metchie III didn’t talk much about his dad, John Metchie Jr. However, we do know that he hails from Nigeria.
Also, it seems that John’s father moved to Taiwan for work and that was where he met Joyce, John’s mother. After having three kids, John’s parents moved to Ghana, and to Canada in 2006.

John Metchie III loves his mother Joyce Metchie. It was her who enrolled him in organized sports including hockey, lacrosse, and soccer
But a mindset for sport wasn’t the only gift John received from his mother. According to the star, he met his mother’s relatives in Taiwan, and “it was a surreal experience.” Experiencing the Taiwanese culture John felt “pretty cool” and it is what differentiates John from all his Alabama teammates.
Sadly, John doesn’t remember much about living in Taiwan.
Fun Fact: John’s mother accompanied him to a college campus at Penn State in June 2018.
How Many Siblings Does John Metchie III Have?
John Metchie III has three siblings. Though we don’t know all of their names, we do know about the one closest to him — his 4-year-older brother, Royce Metchie.
According to the star, it was Royce who introduced him to football after he showed little interest in playing or watching the games his mother signed him up for.
His brother, Royce is also a professional football athlete. The last we checked, he was signed with the CFL club, Calgary. Reportedly, he has spent over 3 seasons with the Calgary Stampeders and won the starting job at safety in 2019 in his second CFL season.
Royce was also a third-round pick in the 2018 CFL Draft and has grown into one of the league’s best safeties.
Talking about his other brothers, John shared, “The relationships I have with my brothers and all my close friends in Brampton and back home mean everything to me. They are the reason why I am the way I am. They helped me with everything, and they continue to be there for me unconditionally. Those relationships definitely mean a lot to me.”
Besides them, John also has a loving older cousin named Jessica Osima, a nurse by profession. She often made it to John’s games.
