Derbyshire resident Alice Walker has been crowned the winner of Mastermind 2022. She took the title home after a phenomenal performance on her specialist subject, The Peak District National Park. She is a member of the Macclesfield and Stockport quiz league.

The retired IT consultant won the grand finale of the BBC Two Quiz show on 11 April 2022. Her win marks the 50th anniversary of the show, which first aired in 1972.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, she has been a part of the Macclesfield and Stockport quiz league since the 1980s. She applied for the show after considering it for years.

Alice correctly answered 33 questions in the show. Among them, 14 questions were picked from the specialist subject. Whilst the remaining 19 questions were from the general knowledge round. She competed against five other contestants. Ian Wang, an auditor from Manchester, and Sarah Trevarthen, an environment and safety consultant from Bury.

Ian chose Sir Steve McQueen’s work as his specialty subject and placed fifth overall with a score of 25 points. Sarah, on the other hand, chose Dame Barbara Hepworth as her subject and scored 27 points, putting her in joint-second place. She shared the distinction with Patrick Buckingham, a London-based solicitor who preferred to answer questions about Carole Lombard, a famous actress from the early twentieth century.

Anthony Fish, a community safety officer from South Wales, finished fourth in the competition. Between his Open All Hours questions and the general knowledge round, he received 26 points. Furthermore, Eleanor Ayres of Cambridgeshire, a solicitor, and editor who chose medieval Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine as her particular subject, finished last on the show with 22 points.

She said of Mastermind to Telegraph: “I thought about entering for many years but never expected to win, and it was quite a shock when I did. The opposition in the final was very tough, but the questions just seemed to fall my way. It was a great experience and such an honor to receive the beautiful trophy.”

Alice Walker Career

According to Facebook, Alice Walker worked at Life IT Ltd. It is a company that specializes in support and consultancy, for key technologies within the IBM and Microsoft portfolio. The company offers any combination of application, operational and technical support no matter what the customer’s legacy environment.

Alice worked for the company till late January 2015 and retired. She announced her retirement on 1 February 2015.

But, she appears to be passionate about traveling and reading. Alice talked about how she prepared for the presentation by reading a lot of guidebooks and looking at maps.

She told, “I just thought it would make an interesting subject because there is quite a variety to know about it, as well as the geographical aspect, there is a lot of history and geology.

Moreover, she added, “I think originally I thought you had to know a lot about your specialist subject before you applied and I used to think I don’t know enough about anything, but then I realized people just picked a subject that they’re interested in and learn up about it, so that’s what I did.”

In addition, she also researched all of the historic locations in the park before walking around with her dog Leo to reinforce her knowledge. The effort she put in definitely paid off as she successfully answered 33 questions posed by journalist Clive Myrie.

As for TV shows, Alice said she has “loved quizzes” since a young age and began taking it seriously in the early 80s when she joined the Macclesfield quiz league. She has previously taken part in BBC’s Eggheads, The Chase on ITV, and Channel 4 quiz show Fifteen To One before plucking up the courage to compete in Mastermind.

Fun Fact: Morris dancing is also one of Alice’s hobbies. Her dance group Poynton Jemmers North West Morris Dancers cheered for her, a clip of which featured on the show.

Who Is Alice Walker Husband?

Alice Walker hasn’t shared about her husband. But, she has been in a relationship with her partner Hayden since the end of September 2013. Her to-be-husband watched her perform on TV with her daughter Laura (@laurawalker86) and granddaughter Evelyn.

On the show, her partner Haydn Spoke, “Alice is very focused with her quizzing, she spends hours reading all the books on her specialist subject, making notes and testing herself. I have tried testing her from her notes but she just knows it all so it’s a bit pointless really.”

Laura even labeled her mother the “cleverest grandma in the country”. At the beginning of the program, Laura said, “I think it’s her time, and I think a woman needs to win”.

According to Laura’s Facebook, she has been living in California since 2013. She lived in Sunnyvale and moved to Santa Clara in 2014.
