It was September 2022 — right after Luka Doncic dropped a record-breaking 47 points on France in the Eurobasket — the news about the basketball star suing his mother Mirjam surfaced.
According to Luka, he sued his eponymous brand (owned by his mother for a long time) because he was unable to submit a trademark under his name.
Well, that’s pretty understandable for someone like Luka, whose marketability is only likely to grow over time, he’d definitely want to have control of his own brand. “I need to be in control of my brand” because “I continue to improve as a player and as a person,” the star even made an official statement.
However, Luka’s mom believed otherwise. Responding with a written message, she wrote, “Everything that is written comes from people who surrounded Luka in the last two years and want complete control over his life and career. I don’t want to wash dirty laundry in public, especially at a time when Luka needs to be collected and focused on the important matches ahead of him.”
Also, she added that she’s been taking care of her son “from the moment he was born,” and the only thing that matted to her was Luka’s happiness. And now when there are people “who want to take advantage of him”, Mirjam said that she would “stand behind protecting (her) son and will never deviate from that.”
Guess, the contentious legal dispute’s intensifying.
But though surprisingly, Luka sued his mother, he revealed that he wasn’t going up against a well-known company or an ex-colleague in business.
