All of a sudden people from all around the world got interested in Nico Porteous’s life as he won New Zealand’s second-ever gold medal in men’s Freeski halfpipe in Bejing during the Winter Olympics.
With gold to match the bronze that he won in Pyeongchang four years ago, Nico has now become the reigning world champion.
Before taking to the podium for the gold, the freeskier had an impeccable first run on the Olympic course, landing a thrilling combination of back-to-back 1620s, to score 93 points. He crashed out on his third run but held onto that lead to win in the finals.

Nico Porteous first stepped into skis at the age of four while on a family trip to France, influenced by his older brother (of course). Like Nico, Miguel Porteous is also a skier, and as Nico says he was always chasing after his older brother as one does as a younger brother.
When the New Zealand team performed a haka in honor of Nico’s achievement at the bottom of the run during the big win, Miguel was also there carrying the new gold medalist.
Miguel, who finished 11th in the same competition, said he is proud to call Nico his brother.
