The 8th season of The Great British Sewing Bee, a spin-off of the format of The Great British Bake Off, officially returned in 2022 and it’s not long before we know who takes home the title of “Britain’s best home sewer.” Over the course of some weeks, 12 talented sewers will battle for the coveted title and handsome cash. Richy Wedge On The Great British Sewing Bee
The popular BBC One show returned to the screens on 27th April, with a new host Sara Pascoe welcoming 12 extraordinarily talented sewers to the bucolic location of a historic woolen mill on the outskirts of Leeds.
The 12 contestants participating this season are Man Yee, Annie, Cristian, Brogan, Mitch, Marni, Steve, Debora, Richy, Gill, Chichi, and Angela, and evaluating their works on the given tasks and challenges are the usual judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant.
Richy Wedge took to Instagram to share his excitement about being a contestant in the Great British Sewing Bee Season 8. He uploaded a short promotional video of the show and wrote, “I’ve been buzzing to tell you all about this and it’s finally out… Can’t wait to see it @britishsewingbee,” in the caption.
BBC One show kicked off with the Pattern Challenge, where the contestants were tasked with making a mini skirt with two patch pockets with piping around the edge. They had to complete the task out of Yorkshire wool and had only 2 hours and 45 minutes in their hands.
The top three contestants for this challenge were Angela, Brogan, and Marni. Sadly, Mitch came in the last position as the task did not go well for him.
The next challenge that is “The Transformation Challenge” saw sewers transform loungewear into a glamorous going out top. After an hour and a half, the contestants were told to arrange their tops on their mannequins and jumble them around so the judges could judge without knowing which top belonged to which sewer. Sadly, it was again Mitch who came last.
The third and last challenge of the first episode was Made to Measure Challenge, which saw the sewers meet their models for the first time.
At the end of the day, it was Mitch the theatre worker, who was sent home. He took the decision on the chin as he said, “It’s the right decision,” to his fellow contestants.

According to Richy’s Instagram bio, he is an 18-19th century dressmaker obsessed with Regency Fashion. He usually busies himself with reading books or visiting museums for research. His trademark, according to gazetteherald.co.uk, is a homemade bowtie, of which he has made over 50.
Reportedly, Richy started sewing when he was 16 and has not been able to stop since then. In an interview with shropshirestar.com, Richy said, “It’s a comforting and productive escape from the everyday, and something I find extremely therapeutic. The mental benefits of sewing should not be underestimated! As time went on, I found my love for costumes and period pieces, and this developed into my recreation of historical garments. It’s very fulfilling to recreate a piece of history with your own hands,” on sewing.
Furthermore, Richy is a self-taught sewer and learned all the skills through YouTube videos. Talking about his worst sewing disaster, he once shared it was a wool skirt that shrunk as soon as he washed it because he had forgotten to preshrink the fabric. On the other hand, his biggest triumph was a Regency dress, which he made over the summer.
Professionally, Richy is a professional baker at Stop Cafe in Shrewsbury, where he works with his partner.
