Pastor Robert Morris and his wife Debbie Morris met in middle school. “I have always said I met Robert in the fifth grade, but Robert is sure we met in sixth,” Debbie has shared on her church’s website. The couple attended the same youth group and church growing up but they didn’t know each other at the time.
Debbie continued further, ” I’d even say we were worlds apart. I was quiet and a rule keeper, and he was never far from trouble. On our youth group trips, the leadership always threatened to send Robert home on a Greyhound bus! And I will say his shenanigans were epic! (I won’t elaborate … I wouldn’t want to give any ideas to impressionable minds.) Amazingly though, he never got kicked off a trip.”
A year younger than her, Robert asked her out at the age of 16. Debbie was fussing with a hanging plant as they stood on the back porch at the end of their date. “Deb, it’s time to come in,” her father remarked as he opened the rear door. Then Robert gave her a good-night kiss, and she was in love with him. In May 1980, Debbie and Robert tied the knot at the ages of just 18 and 19.
In May 2024, on their most recent anniversary, Debbie took to her IG and wrote, “Happy Anniversary to my Sweetie! We have taken thousands of photos together but none of them capture the whole picture of us. They don’t show how special I feel when you look me in the eye. They don’t depict how safe I feel in your arms. They don’t revel how many times a day you make me laugh. They don’t expose how you have cared for me. They don’t highlight how we have overcome. They don’t bind together all the memories we have shared.”
Back to the topic, Christmas of 1982 marked the start of Pastor Robert abuse of 54-year-old accuser Cindy Clemishire.
Cindy asserted that she was sexually abused by Morris, a preacher at the time, when she was just 12 years old. The church leaders asserted that although they were aware of his affair in his early 20s, they were unaware of the depth of the abuse and lack of consent. He does not refute her grave accusations.
In a statement, Robert said, “When I was in my early twenties, I was involved in inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady in a home where I was staying. It was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong. This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years.”
In addition, “In March of 1987, this situation was brought to light, and it was confessed and repented of. I submitted myself to the Elders of Shady Grove Church and the young lady’s father. They asked me to step out of ministry and receive counseling and freedom ministry, which I did. Since that time, I have walked in purity and accountability in this area.”
Then, Robert concluded, “Two years later, in March of 1989, I stepped back into ministry with the full blessing of the elders and her father. In October of 1989, Debbie and I met with her and her family, and I asked their forgiveness, and they graciously forgave me. This sin was dealt with correctly by confession and repentance, which I did in 1987 and 1989.”

Altogether Debbie and Robert Morris share three kids from their marriage. They are named James, Josh, and Elaine.
James serves as Gateway Church’s associate senior pastor. James worked as the first maintenance worker and janitor at Gateway when it originally opened in 2000. He then went to attend Baylor University to study business. He continued in business after that until 2012, when he sensed the Lord urging him to enter the ministry once more.
James started working in the stewardship division of Gateway. His duties within the church increased over time, and he finally rose to the position of executive pastor, managing all Gateway campuses and programs.
Moreover, James and his wife Bridgette joined in marriage in 2009. Together they have three wonderful children: Parker, Mitchell, and Brae. James and Bridgette are both King’s University master’s degree holders in practical theology.
Josh was serving as an executive teaching pastor at Gateway Church until December 2022. He is also the founder of Tov Co since January 2023. He graduated from Full Sail University and Western Governors University.
As for his marital life, Josh is married to his wife of 13 years Hannah. They are parents to Grady and Willow.
In 2010, Debbie’s daughter Elaine tied the knot with Ethan Fisher. Along with Elaine, another pastor, Ethan serves as a pastor at Gateway Church in Houston. On June 19, 2024, they marked their 14th anniversary. Addelynn, Katelynn, Preston, and Jackson are their four children.
