In the early morning of August 2006, Linda Greenlaw received a phone call from a near-hysterical close family friend. It seems Sarai Johnson — a 15-year-old niece of a newcomer to the island — had burst into their house the previous evening, crying uncontrollably, and saying she didn’t want to go back home to her uncle.
As local residents explored, they then found out that Sarai was abused by her alcoholic uncle. Thus, they came together as a community to protect her and nominated Linda to be her legal guardian.
Linda might have faced a wicked ocean storm 1,000 miles from home, spent 4 days from dry land, and seen towering walls of water that hurl themselves onto the main deck smashing anything in their path, but nothing had prepared her for the role of being a mother!
“How will we do this?” Sarai asked her at one point. “I have no idea. But if it’s something you want to happen, it will happen,” Linda responded.
“I did what I wanted when I wanted. Plus, with anything that I ever pursue in my life, if I’m not immediately good at it, I drop it,” she recalled. “With the role of mother, I was nervous about whether I was going to be good or not — and that’s not something you can just dump.”
Plus, Sarai was at the best of her behavior. She racked up a $500 texting phone bill, brought her packet of birth control pills to the dinner table when there were guests, had a vocabulary consisting of the words lame, stupid, and hate, and, most disturbing, she didn’t seem to like herself!
Seeing this, Linda’s family also wondered if she was up to the task. But the Deadliest Catch star knew Sarai needed her and most importantly, she needed Sarai! “I need her. I have lived a very selfish life so far,” she said.
Thankfully, over 5 years, the two “tough, spirited women” opened their hearts to each other and Linda peened their emotional journey in her book Lifesaving Lessons: Notes from an Accidental Mother.

Sarai Johnson Job
Right after Sarai Johnson was adopted by Linda, she started working on her lobster boat. The details about what they did early on are written in Linda’s ninth book Seaworthy: A Swordboat Captain Returns to the Sea.
Fast forward to over a decade, Sarai’s now a seasoned fisherman. She is the busiest in the summer.
As for her education, she attended Gould Academy from 2006 to 2010 and studied social work at Champlain College from 2010 to 2014.
Likewise, Sarai’s mother Linda is an expert fisherman. She was most popular for captaining the Hannah Boden in October 1991 during the famous 1991 “Perfect Storm.” In 2023, she was America’s only female swordfishing captain.
Besides fishing, she loves writing books nonfiction books about life as a commercial fisherman such as Hungry Ocean, The Lobster Chronicles, All Fishermen Are Liars, Seaworthy, and Lifesaving Lessons. For this, she’s won the U.S. Maritime Literature Award (in 2003), and the New England Book Award for nonfiction (in 2004).
Now, taking a step away from sword-fishing to take a stab at crabbing, Linda has joined the cast of Deadliest Catch season 19. “I have been involved in the offshore red cred fishery here in New England and have been fishing fixed gear on and off since I was a kid,” she said. “The difference was primarily hauling single, massive pots as opposed to trawls of smaller traps.”

Yes, Sarai Johnson married her husband Daniel K Hitchcock on September 16, 2017. The two tied the knot at Isle au Haut Light, also called Robinson Point Light, a lighthouse located at Robinson Point in Isle au Haut, Maine.
Her husband, Daniel was born in May 1998 in Sedgwick, ME. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Finance degree from Plymouth State University in 2010 and started his career as a boat captain at Isle Au Haut Boat Co. In 2014, he then became the CFO of Wesmac Custom Boats, Inc. and held this job at the time of writing this article.

Surprisingly, Sarai’s mother Linda only married for the first time just 5 years before her. It was to Steve Wessel, a Maine Maritime Academy graduate. Steve is the co-owner of Wesmac Custom Boats alongside Linda. Together, they handled the company with over 50 employees and were trying to get a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant to bring more diversity to the business and, with it, more profitability.
