Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton was a scrawny, long-bearded mountain man with a foul mouth. He grew up in rural Cocke County, Tennessee, aka one of the four “moonshine capitals in the world”. Marvin learned the art of moonshining from his father.
Marvin had his brushes with the law. For the first time, he was convicted of selling illegal liquor in the early 1970s. However, he mostly kept out of trouble after that.
Popcorn Sutton had a modern spin on his job as he appeared in documentaries and even penned an autobiography, Me and My Likker. Unlike other moonshiners who have gone legit and cashed in, Marvin insisted on moonshining the old-fashioned way.
In 2007, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives busted him with 850 gallons of moonshine. A year later, he was convicted and was due to report to prison. However, on March 16, 2009, Popcorn was found dead. Although the reason for his death was never out, authorities suspected it was carbon-monoxide poisoning.
Popcorn’s son Solomon was 14 when he died at the age of 62. Now that it has been over 13 years since Popcorn’s death, Solomon, who is now 27, is following in his father’s footsteps in the industry.
As per Moonshiners’ Season 12 episode description, Solomon is teaming up with stars Mike Cockrell and Jerry Benson to help them devise new liquor recipes and stay ahead of the competition.
