Sophia Nomvete On Lord Of The Rings: Rings Of Power
Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power might be set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, but some characters are entirely new creations. And amongst those new entities, Sophia Nomvete had a chance to portray a dwarf princess, “Disa,” married to married to Durin IV (Owain Arthur).
Recalling the auditions, Sophia shared that she had an advantage over others as the dwarven princess was “maternal,” and she was about eight days from giving birth to her daughter. “I thought, well, you don’t get much more maternal than that,” the actress joked.
However, the actress initially had no idea when she auditioned for. But when she did, she felt like a “dream come true on a personal level, and on a career level.” And it wasn’t just because she was the female Black dwarf to have ever been seen cinematically or to touch Tolkien’s work, but also because she was a “mother, and to be able to host this character who is a princess” was everything that she believed “the world and the franchise need and should be really really proud of.”
In case you haven’t watched the show, Sophia’s character is one of “the cogs that keep Khazad-dûm moving.” Using her talent, wits, and strength, this princess help rule over the then-thriving and active kingdom — a much different society than the crumbling underground realm we see in the events of The Lord of the Rings.
But despite her uncanny performance, she had to face some racist trolls arguing at the diverse cast of characters in this new imagining of Middle Earth. To which, she responded, “I have to look at the bigger picture, and the bigger picture is that I am here.”
