7 January 2022 saw the return of the extremely popular reality TV series RuPaul’s Drag Race on VH1. RuPaul Charles returns as the judge, mentor, and host and with him, 14 young drag-queens are entering the show business world. One of the participants in this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is Willow Pill.

Willow Pill On RuPaul’s Drag Race
Willow announced herself as one of the competitors on RuPaul’s Drag Race on her Instagram on 3 December 2021. She wrote, “EEEK! Are you ready for the trip of your life?… Check out @rupaulsdragrace YouTube tomorrow for the full runway and Meet the Queens!”
Similarly, Gold Derby, while introducing her as one of the contestants in the 14th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, describes her as “A quirky little pill, this queen digs deep to deliver a wicked sense of humor and a darkly eccentric drag style. She is Season 11 winner Yvie Oddly’s drag sister, so expect the unexpected from Willow Pill.”
Willow has a close relationship with Yvie. She met Yvie at a gay bar and ever since she has been looking up to Yvie. She even made a documentary about Yvie in college.
So far, five episodes of the show have aired and she seems to be doing well. She has not yet been in the elimination danger. She won the third episode. And based on the performances so far, she is one of the favorites to win this season.

Willow Pill Illness
Willow Pill suffers from a rare genetic disease called cystinosis. Cystinosis blocks one’s kidneys, eyeballs, and fingers. It also makes little crystals grow in the eyes. Although Willow suffers from such chronic illness, she is determined to not let it stop her.
She has turned her illness into her strength. She has derived her brand of dark humor from her suffering. Willow has been trying to find ways to make her illness funny. She said that humor is the tool to help her find light in her life of illness.
Part of her name comes because of her illness. Her adopted last name “Pill” comes from the fact that Willow has to take a lot of medications (many of them pills) for her illness.
She also said that it was important to introduce the illness to the show. RuPaul’s Drag Race has been a platform to raise awareness about illnesses in the past as well. Cynthia Lee Fontaine from season 8 had Stage 1 liver cancer. Similarly, Tamisha Iman in season 12 had colon cancer.

Willow Pill Ethnicity: Is She Of The Asian Origin?
Based on some of Willow’s baby pictures, Willow Pill is most likely white Caucasian American and not Asian.
However, some fans were speculating about her Asian heritage on Reddit. The fans wanted to know if she is Asian and they could not figure it out. And someone in the thread noted that Will’s shape and height must be because of her illness.

Willow Pill is a drag queen entertainer. She started her drag career in the “sticky” clubs of Denver. Later, she moved to Chicago and became a very popular performer. According to Willow, despite her illness, she had had the incredible privilege to be able to work as a drag queen.
She found some support from her family as well, especially from her sister. Willow has called her sister “the kindest, strongest, most obnoxious” person she knows and her number one fan.
Her drag is full of contradictions to encapsulate the full human experience. Apparently, her drag is “joyful & sad”, “sexy & nasty”, “jaw-dropping & embarrassing” at the same time.
