Meet Andrew Fuller, The Winner Of Netflix’s Is It Cake?
Netflix’s 2022 reality baking competition “Is It Cake?” saw nine bakers including Andrew, going head to head to create hyper-realistic cakes to impress the panel of judges.
The contestants joining Andrew this inaugural season were — April Julian, Dessiree Salaverria, Hemu Basu, Jonny Manganello, Justin Rasmussen-Ellen, Nina Charles, Sam Cade, and Steve Weiss — each blessed with their own set of skills.
But since this was a reality competition, only three participants were selected for the final round — Andrew, Hemu, and April. Their final task was to fool the three celebrity guests, Loni Love, Bobby Moynihan, and Karamo Brown, as their cake was put in a line of three real decoys.
So, Andrew crafted an intricately detailed leather-looking suitcase with edible clothing spilling out from the sides. And its insides contained two different types of cakes. One side — a white velvet with mascarpone cheese, espresso buttercream, and ladyfingers emulating a tiramisu, and the other — a pistachio cake with honey rose buttercream and fig jam.
Meanwhile, April made creating a sewing machine complete with moving parts, and Hemu built a statue cake (which judges correctly guessed and he was eliminated).
Thus, after a tight competition between Andrew and April, the judges decided that the edible leather-looking suitcase was the victor.
As promised, Andrew then walked out with the £50,000 grand prize plus the extra £30,000 he won over the “winner stays on” relay part of the competition.
But he wasn’t the only one who went home with cash in his hand. Hemu was awarded $10,000 for her work in the “winner stays on,” meanwhile, April got $15,000.
Also, Jonny Manganello and Nina Maria Charles earned themselves $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.
Andrew Fuller Career
Andrew Fuller is a lifelong artist who fully submerged into cake sculpting in 2017. One of his earliest works, a pie with what appears to be a human face baked into it, went viral and since then, he’s been on the charts.
As of 2022, he baked under the moniker Sugar Freakshow and served the area around Des Moines, Iowa. Also, after the win, Andrew was getting tons of demands. However, the level of detail his cake art required meant he could only fulfill 4 to 5 orders a week.
Talking about his inspiration, Andrew shared that he was a huge horror fan with “Psycho” as his favorite movie. But he liked “anything spooky or macabre” and got his “inspiration from (his) favorite directors.”
In 2014, his house was even featured in the Des Moines Register as the “Macabre Mansion.”
