The show explores how explores the story of the downfall of Sarma, her New York establishment Pure Food and Wine, and becoming a “vegan fugitive.”
To briefly unfold, viewers see how a man named Shane Fox AKA Anthony met Sarma Melngailis on Twitter in 2013. They fall in love with each other and get married. However, she starts funneling money from the restaurant’s fund and sending it to Anthony for several unusual reasons.
Anthony allegedly manipulated her into believing that he could make her and her beloved pit bull immortal (which he denied). A source close to Sarma described a scenario in which Anthony resorted to cult-like techniques, including gaslighting, sleep deprivation, and sexual humiliation, to control her.
They went on a run after stealing a staggering $2 million from the restaurant and its staff. They were hiding in $99-a-night Fairfield Inn & Suites, a Tennessee motel, and made the mistake of ordering a Domino’s pizza which helped authority track and led to their arrest.
Anthony reportedly spent $1 million at the Foxwoods Resort Casino and an additional $200,000 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. On top of that, he spent $10,000 on Uber rides, about $70,000 in European Vacation, and $80,000 on luxury watches.
