Over the years, Hulu has brought many true-crime-related shows that captured viewers’ attention but their newest offering The Lesson Is Murder is a show where Bryanna Fox delves into the mind of three convicted murderers: Will Davis, Robert Fratta, and Ivié DeMolina with her students.
Bryanna is a criminologist, former FBI Special Agent, and associate professor. “This idea for this show was inspired by my 2018 forensic psychology class at USF,” Fox said to USF News. “My students ended up breaking open that cold case, and spoiler alert, something similar happens with a case in the first episode of this docuseries.”
Her intention with The Lesson Is Murder is to provide a glimpse into the reality of profiling for those of us who like investigating these murders at home. “Criminology is not like what you see on Criminal Minds,” she told prior to the show’s release. “I wanted to do a show where I can show the actual process of how cases are solved: using research and science. I also want the viewers to learn scientific and research-based information from this show so they can identify red flags on their own and report suspicious activity to law enforcement.”

At the University of South Florida, Dr. Bryanna Bryttany Hahn Fox is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology and a Faculty Affiliate of the Florida Mental Health Institute. Dr. Fox is a former FBI Special Agent who received her Ph.D. from Cambridge University.
Her work focuses on developing evidence-based police and crime prevention tactics, as well as identifying psychological and developmental risk factors for criminal conduct and prolific offending. She is the founder and director of the SPRUCE Research Lab and is on the executive board of the Division of Developmental and Life-Course Criminology of the American Society of Criminology.
In addition to the 2019 Outstanding Research Achievement Award from the University of South Florida, the 2014 Nigel Walker Prize for Outstanding Ph.D. Research from the University of Cambridge, and the 2013 Excellence in Law Enforcement Research Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, she also won the 2017 Early Career Award from the American Society of Criminology’s Division of Developmental and Life-Course Criminology.
