In 2010, Tim and his teammate Bob Yoder had their volleyball players’ numbers retired. “It was very humbling,” Tim had said of his career, which saw him play in the NCAA championship three consecutive years against rival UCLA and legend Karch Kiraly. Before retiring his No. 10, he played at USC from 1978-81.
Following his retirement, Tim at the time was focused on coaching his son at El Segundo as he also helped bring that program credibility.
Before he went on to become a four-time world champion and winner of the Manhattan Beach Open five times, Tim Hovland was a three-time first-team All-American at the University of Southern California and was on its 1980 NCAA championship team. He was a three-sport high school star in California and had moved on to be among the best in the world in both indoor and beach volleyball.
While at USC, Tim was selected USA Volleyball All-America first-team six times from 1979 to 1984. He helped the U.S. win the Canadian Cup by defeating Cuba in 1981 and was named MVP. He sparked Team USA to the silver medal at the 1981 NORCECA Championship.
Tim also spent eight years competing in the Italian Serie A1 pro league. While not playing in Italy during the winter months, he returned to his roots to play beach volleyball. He bested 46 titles on the AVP Tour and over $1 million. All of this and more led him to be inducted into the California Beach Volleyball Association Hall of Fame in 2000. That same year, he was also picked for Volleyball Magazine’s All-Century first team.
