Harvard’s first Black president Claudine Gay is married to her husband Christopher C Afendulis. There aren’t many details about their marriage but they have been an acquaintance or friends for more than 20 years.

Before being elected in her role, Claudine was serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In her new role, she will be the first Black person and the second woman to lead an Ivy League school. She will take over the position on July 1, 2023.

Claudine is a leading scholar of political behavior, considering issues of race and politics in America. She is a dedicated educator and mentor whose courses have focused on topics including racial and ethnic politics in the U.S., Black politics in the post-Civil Rights era, American political behavior, and democratic citizenship. She is the founding chair of the Inequality in America Initiative, a multidisciplinary effort launched in 2017.

Claudine is regarded as a key voice on the subject of American political engagement. She is the child of Haitian immigrants. She joined Harvard in 2006 as a professor of government and African and African American studies, and since then, she has researched a wide range of topics, including how various social and economic factors influence political beliefs and voting.

Penny Pritzker, chair of the Harvard presidential search committee, also commended Claudine. The latter, according to Pritzker, is a “great leader” who wants to “sustain and strengthen” the academic standards at the university. Harvard has joined a group of Ivy League colleges where female candidates are chosen for chief positions rather than male candidates. Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania make up the other two institutions.

Who Are Christopher C Afendulis Parents?

Christopher C Afendulis was born to his parents Constantine “Deno” Afendulis and Phyllis Helen “Fotene” Afendulis. His parents met each other in 1963 and they married at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago in 1964.

Deno was born to his parents James and Sophia Afendulis who were Greek immigrants as the oldest of three sons.

Phyllis was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1936 to William and Theresa Gianopoulos, immigrants from Greece. She was the youngest of six children. After graduating from Austin High School in Chicago, Phyllis attended St. Basil Academy in Garrison, New York, where she began her professional training as an educator and Greek School teacher.

After graduating from St. Basil’s, Phyllis worked as the church secretary and the head of the Greek school at Sts. Constantine and Helen Church in Detroit, Michigan. She returned to Chicago, finished her bachelor’s degree in education at Pestalozzi Froebel Teachers College, and also completed a master’s degree in education at Roosevelt University. She taught first grade in Broadview, Illinois, and also Greek school in Skokie, Illinois.

Christopher’s father, Deno had two brothers Alexander and Theodore who passed away after Deno. Alexander the second of three sons was a proud graduate of both Muskegon High School and Muskegon Junior College, and even more proud to be a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History.

Alexander achieved ABD status in his study of Balkan history when he chose to finish his studies and take a position on the faculty of Grand Rapids Junior College, where he taught American Politics and Government for 29 years. He was an avid student of American politics, American history, and European history for his entire life.

Theodore, the youngest of three, was an active member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Muskegon. He had a beautiful singing voice that he contributed to the church choir. His family members always marveled at his ability to quickly understand how electrical and mechanical things worked. He was a graduate of Muskegon High School and Muskegon Junior College.

Whereas, Chris’s mother Phyllis died on 15 October 2020 at the age of 84.

Talking about Christopher’s siblings, he grew up with three a brother named James and two sisters Niki (Mike Gutowsky) and Teresa Micheil (Richard). Christopher lost his sister Niki before his mother.

His late sister Niki was a graduate of Mona Shores High School, Muskegon Community College, and the School of Business at Michigan State University, following in their father’s footsteps. She died peacefully at the age of 47 on February 22, 2013, after a courageous 2-year battle with brain cancer.
