Growing up, Cody Hawken never felt happy. “All my life I was just sad,” he said. Even before he found drugs, he admitted that he was just a “sad person” who didn’t feel accepted and like he belonged anywhere. So, when he did find drugs, it connected him to the people, who he thought were his friend at the time.

“I never really pictured a life,” Cody said. He thought he would never live to see 18. But then, he turned 18 and 21, and life was still going on. So, realizing this wasn’t what he wanted — stagnant, ruining relationships and his life — he decided to seek help. Then, he traveled from his home state of Nevada to Massachusetts to get treatment for his addiction at AA Recovery and Rehab.

“When I had reached the end of my rope, I came out here about two and a half years ago and I spent my last $400 on a plane ticket out here and I had $19 when I landed in Logan Airport,” he recalled. “Just broken, just, like, a broken, hopeless addict.”

Fortunately, a few months into treatment, Cody began to see a shift. “The first thought in my head wasn’t ‘I’m not good enough,’” he said. It was also during the sobriety journey that he met Mikayla (in December 2020). He was also a year sober then.

“The man who came into my life and showed me right away what true love felt like. He made me believe in real genuine love, but he also made me believe in myself. I couldn’t ask for a better partner,” Mikayla praised him.

Almost a year into their relationship, Cody and Mikayla then got engaged on November 20, 2021. “I got down on one knee and proposed to her. I cannot wait to spend my life with her. She has been the best partner and I couldn’t ask for a better woman to be by my side through my struggles and successes,” Cody later shared the good news on his Instagram.

Now, after two years of engagement, the lovebirds have finally tied the knot on July 1, 2023. The duo wed in an outdoor ceremony overlooking the ocean.
