Damacio Diaz On Hulu’s Killing County
Hulu is premiering a true crime show called Killing County that follows the story of corruption in a California Police Department and how it affected families. While the primary subject of the show is Jorge Ramirez, Jr. viewers also get to meet a former police detective Damacio Diaz.
Damacio, formerly a detective with the Bakersfield Police Department, was sentenced today to five years in prison for bribery, possession, and attempted possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine. He also made and subscribed to a false income tax return, Acting United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
On December 5, 2016, U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill mandated that Damacio start completing his sentence. On May 31, 2016, Damacio entered a plea of guilty to the charges. Patrick Mara, 36, of Bakersfield, Diaz’s former partner, pled guilty to similar crimes on June 20, 2016, and his sentencing is set for October 17, 2016.
Court records state that between April 2012 and February 2015, Damacio handled a criminal informant who was involved in the widespread sale and distribution of methamphetamine while working as a police officer for the Bakersfield Police Department (BPD). Despite being fully aware of the informant’s persistent illegal behavior, Damacio kept running the informant.
During this period, the informant offered bribes to Damacio in exchange for information about law enforcement operations as well as protection from scrutiny and arrest. While working with the BPD, Diaz accepted unlawful bribes and participated in the narcotics trade. On September 20, 2012, while performing his job duties, Damacio stopped a car driven by two people from Yakima, Washington, and conducted a search of the vehicle using a BPD dog handler and police dog.
During the investigation, a large ice chest with various bags holding about 10 pounds of methamphetamine was found. The BPD canine handler did not remove any drugs from the car; instead, he turned the situation over to Damacio and Mara, who took control of the methamphetamine seizure and oversaw the incident’s investigation.
About one pound of methamphetamine from the car stop was booked into evidence by Damacio a week later. The remaining nine pounds of methamphetamine were kept by Damacio and Mara, who later sold it for their own benefit. The plea deal states that Damacio also submitted a combined income tax return for the year 2012 that fraudulently listed a total income of $168,485 and omitted at least $97,900 in extra revenue.
Where Is Damacio Diaz Today?
In May 2020, the news of Damacio Diaz being released after serving his time made headlines. He was released from a halfway house in Sacramento, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Both had their sentences reduced. His partner Mara was released in April of the same year after serving a little less than four years in federal prison.
Damacio hasn’t updated his LinkedIn yet. It states that he has been serving as a detective at Bakersfield Police Department since July 1998. From 1996 to 1998, Damacio served as a police officer at Tulare Police Department. Moreover, Damacio completed high school at McFarland High School. He attended the College of the Sequoias from 1990 to 1992.
Damacio later earned B.Sc. in Criminology/Military Science from California State University, Fresno.
On his FB, Damacio has reported that he is now retired and enjoying life with his wife and kids.
