Having only around $50 in his pocket when he arrived in Miami in 1980 from Ukraine, Mark took odd jobs including being a dishwasher and a short-order cook before saving up enough money to operate a tiny deli-grocery.
In 1985, he and his business partner Mark Gelman co-founded Marky’s, which has since developed into a gourmet foods company with annual revenues of over $20 million, according to Zaslavsky. Marky’s Caviar, one of the top sellers of domestic and imported caviar in the country, claims to have 2,000 regular customers. Some of the top Russian eateries in New York, like Brasserie Pushkin and Onegin, are among its patrons.
