Gary Noesner Career

Gary Noesner loves saving lives and serving the nation. But his passion arose from an unexpected source during his Florida childhood. During an episode of The Mickey Mouse Club set at the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C, Gary said, “20s and German spies in the ’40s I was hooked.”

So, Gary joined the FBI in 1972  as a new agent. However, it was only in 1980 that he began dipping his toes in the world of negotiation by learning of its process, some famous hostage cases, and the complex psychological aspects behind the same.

1980 was also the year he attended his first negotiation course and fell in love with the entire concept of crisis management.

Then, he joined the Terrorism Squad where he hunted down spies and dealt with international incidents that involved American citizens. In 1985, Gary was the one who interrogated four hijackers of TWA Flight 847 and the terrorist takeover of the cruise ship Achille Lauro on the Mediterranean Sea and got Mulqi to admit being the leader of the plot. “This was an important moment for me when I began to think about the distinction between interrogation and interviewing,” he recalled.

For Gary, the job of a negotiator is all about understanding and empathy. And after the Waco siege, many of the negotiators, including Gary suffered from feelings of sadness and had difficulty sleeping. “The thing that snapped me out of my funk was more work,” said Gary.

In 2003, Gary then returned from the FBI and joined Control Risks, LLC as its senior Vice President. There, he provided Control Risks clients worldwide training and operational assistance in managing crisis and kidnap incidents around the world for 5 long years whilst writing a book.
