“He’s a fighter, so he didn’t want to show it.” He added: “I knew I caught him good, I did not know I caught him like that where I thought he wasn’t going to come out to the ring… but I knew I was about to knock him out.”

Baltimore’s boxing star Gervonta Davis is the son of Garrin Davis. Garrin and his ex-wife Kenya Brown welcomed their son on 7 November 1994.

Because Garrin was in and out of Gervonta’s life during his early years he lacked stability when he was growing up tough like most of the kids. Moreover, Garrin’s wife battled with drug abuse so his son got very little care and nurturing environment.

Garrin was interviewed by New York Times about him being in and out of Gervonta’s life because of his prison stint. He said The Upton Boxing Club allowed his son to avoid the lure of the streets that ensnared so many others. But it took work. “He made a lot of sacrifices,” said Garrin, who got clean after his last stint in prison. “A lot of the friends that he had, because he made the choice to come here, he didn’t end up where they at.”

Though he didn’t have a father, he had a father figure in his life, his coach Calvin Ford. “I was taken from my mother and father when I was 4 or 5 years old,” Gervonta said. Gervonta moved around a lot as a youngster and teenager, staying sometimes with family members and sometimes in foster care. Ford, his coach, has remained a constant in his life over the years, though.

“He was about 7 years old when one of his uncles brought him into the gym,” Calvin Ford said.

“As a little kid, when he got into trouble, no one wanted him around,” Calvin Ford said.”He was just looking for some attention, and everyone was always pushing him away. I was training a lot of kids, but [Gervonta] was always there. Every time I turned around, he was just there. He’s become like my son.”

However, years later, Garrin definitely made it. Moreover, he also has a sound relationship with his parents.
