Grace Whiteside On Netflix’s Blown Away Season 3
When Blown Away first came to screen in 2019, it became an instant hit as viewers loved the fiery competition between the contestants, who pushed themselves to their limits to become ‘Best in Glass.’
Presented by Nick Uhas and Katherine Gray, Blown Away Season 3 dropped on Netflix on July 22nd, 2022. The newest season of the hit Netflix show features 10 talented glassblowers, which includes Trenton Quiocho, John Moran, Claire Kelly, Maddy Hughes, Dan Friday, Brenna Baker, Minhi England, John Sharvin, and Grace Whiteside.
Grace, who identifies themself as non-binary, hopes to inspire other non-binary trans people through their part in Blown Away Season 3.
Grace first fell in love with glass while they were in college. In a chat with Arje, Grace revealed that they first wanted to study textiles in college. Since the weaving class was full, they took glassblowing. They were immediately hooked by the art of glassblowing.
Grace loves that there’s a sports element in glassblowing. They also love how molten glass mimics the body’s movement.
Talking more about glassblowing, Grace said, “We learn how to use our bodies to work with the glass- there’s a human, physicalized empathy in how the glass folds and forms. It’s like working with living creatures!,” in an interview with Arje.
Grace Whiteside Career/Work
Grace Whiteside is a glassblower and a performance artist by profession.
They are the founder of an interdisciplinary collaborative design line called Sticky Glass. The Brooklyn-based business specializes in multi-functional, performative, and collaborative glasswork. The company website shares that all the glasses at Sticky Glass are hand-blown by a team of LGBTQ+, POC, and female-identifying folks based in Brooklyn, New York.
Sticky Glass aims to donate all the proceeds from orders to an organization that secures the safety of trans bodies, black lives, immigrant families, and individual, who are in critical need of financial support. They also aim to use reused, recycled, and biodegradable packing materials.
In two or three years, Grace sees that Sticky Glass could go in many directions, which is exciting to them. Grace also finds that glassblowing is a tough industry to get into as there are not many jobs available for beginners.
To talk more about Grace, they have two BFA (Bachelor in Fine Arts) in Sculpture and Craft from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Since 2017, Grace has also exhibited their works at many popular venues including Black Iris Gallery, Recess, Westbeth Gallery, Present Company, Established Gallery, and UrbanGlass’s Agnes Varis Art Center.
As of this writing, Grace’s work has already been featured in the Corning Museum of Glass’s New Glass Review, InStyle Magazine, Glass Quarterly Magazine, and Page Six.
A participating artist in the 2018 Art In Odd Places Performance festival, the GenderFail Archive Project, and Meet Future film festival, Grace Whiteside is a 2022 fellow at Wheaton Arts and also has an upcoming solo performance at the Chrysler Museum of Glass in 2022.
The Blown Away Season 3 contestant has also received plenty of awards and grants for their contributions to glassblowing and performing arts. In 2019, they received the Vermont Studio Center Artist Grant, and in 2017, they received the Student Scholarship by Glass Art Studio.
