On 13 February 2023-night, while the world elsewhere was busy awaiting Valentine’s Day the next day, Michigan State University saw the tragic shooting happen. A gunman opened fire in two buildings which killed three students and critically injured five others. “I am 21 years old, and this is the second mass shooting that I have now lived through,” the MSU student Jackie Matthews said in a TikTok video that she shared post the shooting on 14 February 2023.
Now a senior at the university, she was a student at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut when gunman Adam Lanza killed 20 students and six teachers and staff on 14 December 2012.
Jackie in the said video spoke from a room across the road from where Anthony Dwayne McRae gunned down the victims just hours before.
Still suffering from a “full-blown PTSD fracture” in her lower back from the hours spent crouching in her Sandy Hook classroom, she remembered all the families and friends of the Michigan State shooting. Afterward, she continued with her motive for making the video. She said that just love and prayers are not enough. There also needs to be legislation and action, she pressed. “We can no longer allow this to happen. We can no longer be complacent”, she continued, and just like that she drew thousands of retweets and comments.
