Jodi Rodgers appeared on the original Netflix TV show Love On The Spectrum as a sexologist and counselor. Love On The Spectrum followed individuals who are on the autism spectrum and showcases their dating experiences. Hence she was hired to guide the casts on the show.
Jodi has experience working with neurodiverse people. However, when the producers of the show first approached her, she declined to join. She was reluctant to appear in the series, where her private work helping people navigate the challenges of dating would be made into entertainment.
“Originally I said that there’s no way that I’m going to be filmed doing my work on television because it’s very vulnerable,” Jodi said over Zoom from her home in Alstonville, on the east coast of Australia told New York Times. “I hold my job to a really high standard, and I really believe in developing a genuine relationship with the people that I work with.”
Her fears were allayed when she realized she’d have hours to work with each customer, albeit the time appears to be cut in half once the taped material is edited. “People say, ‘Gee, you did so well in three minutes,’” Jodi said. “Or I’ve got somebody saying, ‘How dare you say that to so and so?’ I’m like, ‘That was 30 seconds of our conversation.’”
Upon realizing the creator’s good intentions she signed up to appear on the show.
The show, which debuted on ABC Australia, has been chastised for its lack of diversity and “neurotypical gaze” approach to its subjects. However, it has a worldwide following of fans who appreciate its “warmth and intelligence” and “authenticity.” Ms. Rodgers deserves a lot of credit for it.
“We all know the anxiety of first dates,” Jodi told NY Times. “We all know how complex it is, how nerve-racking We all know that we spend hours prior to going out grooming ourselves. Being autistic is not different from the rest of us in that way. But there are just some innate difficulties that autistic people have in this area.”

I started working within the community sector, in adult disability services and sexual health counseling and education”.
She talked about her career path and shared, “My understanding of sexuality isn’t about the act of sex. My understanding of sexuality is about body image, self-esteem, our capacity to give consent, our capacity to negotiate with an intimate partner, our capacity to compromise with another person”.
Speaking about her approach, Jodi explained whenever her client comes to see her she puts something on the table like a magazine. This would establish a connection between her and her client.
Some people would say something like, “Why are you teaching autistic people neurotypical social skills?” And I’m saying, “I’m not. I’m teaching them what neurotypical people expect of them. I’m not expecting them to act that way”.
According to LinkedIn, Jodi worked for Autism Spectrum Australia from 2005 to 2016. In 2015 she founded Birds and Bees and has been working as a sexologist counselor for Birds and Bees Pty Lt. Her organization provides counseling, workshop and training, and consultancy services.
She established Birds and Bees after 25 years of working within the education, disability, and sexuality fields. She has worked in Australia and internationally and across the lifespan within the early intervention, schools, adult and community settings, in both disability and sexual health organizations.
Coming to her academic qualifications, Jodi holds a BEd from the University of Canberra, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Special Education from the Same. She also holds a Diploma of Counselling from the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors. Furthermore, she also holds a Master’s Degree in Health Science, Sexual Health from the University of Sydney.
