Joel Hungate On Netflix’s Outlast
Survival shows are nothing new in the present TV scene. But Netflix’s Outlast set itself apart by asking the contestants to team up, whilst knowing that there can only be one winner. Yes, 16 contestants were stranded in an isolated location in the wilds of Alaska to “outlast” one another and win that stunning $1 million cash prize.
So, as per the rule, Joel joined the Delta Camp alongside his teammates, Jordan Williams, Paul Preece, and Dawn Nelson. Each of them felt like an outcast as the other three teams did not want them. But little did others know that they would be the last team to retain all four of its original members.
The bond between the four members was unbreakable. Infact, it was Jordan’s enthusiasm and competitive spirit that kept the group going. Sadly, after the group lacked a food supply, Jordan was medically evacuated, and Paul abandoned them to join Charlie Camp.
Furious, Joel and Dawn then confronted Paul and asked him if they meant nothing to him. And to add salt to the wound, their sleeping bags were stolen. That night, Joel and Dawn tried their best to spend the night without sleeping bags, and the next day, Javier Colón of the Bravo Camp asked them to partner with him.
Obviously, neither Alpha nor Charlie Camp was happy with the possible alliance and sabotaged their development — Alpha Camp raided Javier’s base and Charlie Camp ensured that the Delta Camp wouldn’t find peace on their side of the river.
Finally, unable to cope with the situation, Joel dripped out of the competition.
Where Is Joel Hungate Today?
Today, Joel Hungate lives in McCordsville, Indiana. The survivalist continues to sharpen the skills he learned in Outlast and has gone on to complete many more mountaineering expeditions.
In case you didn’t know, Joel is a mountaineer who was the first to ascend a peak in a remote region of Western Mongolia to rescue a person injured in a rock slide.
Recalling his experience on the show, Joel said, “This was a wild ride. Living in the Alaskan wilderness was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever had to do. It was an otherworldly experience – a disorienting contrast, juxtaposing unbelievable beauty with the unrelenting and capricious nature of the conditions and challenges of the game.”
The survivalist also remarked that he got to put every facet of who he was, as a person, to the test — physically, mentally, morally, spiritually, relationally, emotionally, and technically.

Who Are Joel Hungate Parents?
Joel Hungate was born to his parents, Lisa Muegge and William G Hungate.
Sadly, his mother, Lisa left this world in January 2016, at the age of 52. She was a Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine graduate who worked at Elanco Animal Health (Eli Lilly).
As for his father, William turned 58 in September 2022. He is a Purdue University graduate who lived in Greensburg, Indiana with his new wife, Kay Hungate, the Director, Product Program Mgmt of Aon Corporation.
Also, Joel’s grandfather William Russell Hungate took his last breath in October 2012 at the age of 76. He was a 1954 graduate of Waldron High School and was a member of the St. Paul Kiwanis Club.
Talking about his siblings, Joel has two brothers named Nate and AJ Muegge.

Joel Hungate married his wife Jessica Hungate on May 21, 2011. He says she’s a wonderful lady who not only puts up with his nonsense but does so while being an incredible mama to their twins. Yes! Joel is blessed with twins. They — Maximus Gregory Hungate and Charlotte Ann Hungate — arrived at 5:08 and 5:18 am on January 2, 2018.
Also. a few years later, Joel and Jessica had another baby, completing their family of five.
“Just blessed to be parents, and the kiddos are blessed with one incredible mama,” Joel once featured his babies on IG.
His wife, Jessica hails from Indianapolis, Indiana and she worked at Eli Lilly and Company with Joel’s mother. She turned 35 in 2023.
“Happiest of Mother’s Days to this lovely lady— You never cease to amaze me and we are so blessed by you every day! Having you through everything makes me the luckiest fella in the world and you are the best mama any set of twins and an infant could ask for,” Joel dedicate a mother’s day post to her in May 2020.

Joel Hungate is a Mental Health Advocate, Storyteller, to reimagine Healthcare Delivery. In 2023, he was working as the Director of Hancock Wellness and Employer Strategy at Hancock Regional Hospital for 2 ½ years.
Prior to that, he worked as the Vice President of Orthopedic Programs at DARI Motion for 3 ½ years and also owned Hungate Consulting Group.
From May 2011 to August 2016, he also worked at Zimmer Biomet as a full-line orthopedic consultant.
As for his education, Joel got his Bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue University in 2011 and his MBA from Quantic School of Business and Technology in 2019.
