Although it is unclear when and how Elizabeth Arnett and John Marvin Murdaugh met each other but their engagement was publicly announced in 2007. At the time they also announced that the wedding of the pair was planned for March 29, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg.
Their wedding was officiated by Dr. David Alistair Renwick of Spartanburg, SC, and Reverend John Wesley Culp of Columbia, SC. The wedding was followed by a reception at the Piedmont Club.
On their wedding, John’s father honorable Randolph Murdaugh III served as best man. Randolph Murdaugh IV and Richard Alexander (Alex) Murdaugh, Sr., the two brothers of John served as groomsmen in the wedding. The wedding director was Mrs. Samuel Baylis Shackelford III.
Furthermore, music was provided by Alice Tillotson Ratterree, soloist; Marcia Craft Andrews, organist; Peter Allen Moore, violinist; Daniel Lee Kirsop, trumpeter; and Marsha Perrin Hood, flutist. After a trip to Costa Rica, the couple reportedly resides in Okatie, South Carolina, outside of Beauford, SC.

After Alex’s younger son Paul smashed into the tiny family boat and killed Mallory Beach in February 2019, John was the one who assisted in removing it from Archer’s Creek Bridge. Shortly after the shooting murders of Paul and their mother in June 2021, he apparently even managed to go inside the Moselle hunting lodge alongside his brother’s older son Buster.
The two Murdaughs were then observed gambling in Las Vegas together after allegedly leaving with some large rifles that may have been used in the shooting.
It’s important to remember that from the beginning, both Randy and John have openly shown their support for their brother Alex in relation to the death of his wife and son in 2021. After all, they gave an exclusive interview to “Good Morning America” a few days after the tragedy, in which the younger one claimed they didn’t know who may have wanted to harm the family in such a terrible way.
Since Mallory’s death in 2019, they were aware that Alex had been receiving anonymous threats, but they never once made an effort to track out the threats’ originators because they didn’t believe they were genuine.
