Kathleen Marie McLaughlin and her ex-husband Jared Fogel were married in July 2010 after knowing each other for nearly 10 years. But after 5 years of marriage, Kathleen filed for divorce from her ex-husband on 19 August 2015 on the same day Jared agreed to a plea deal in which he would agree to plead guilty to charges of s*x with minors and possession of child pornography.

Kathleen told “CBS This Morning” in a new interview that she “knew nothing about his involvement” in s*x crimes against minors until the FBI came knocking at the door of their home in Zionsville, Indiana — which they shared with their two young children — last year.  “That’s how I found out,” she said. “They walked in, and you’re just in shock.”

When asked whether she understood what was going on at the time, she said, “No. No, I didn’t understand any of it, to be honest. I mean you just — you float out of yourself because the FBI shouldn’t be in your house.”

Kathleen told CBS that her husband had “two lives.” “You know, he was home with the kids and I in one life, and he was out on the road in a different life, and he was able to keep those two very separate in a way that I couldn’t even fathom,” she said.

By November 2015, the couple had finalized their divorce, according to ET. According to documents from the Boone County Superior Court that ET was able to obtain, Kathleen, who has returned to using her maiden name of McLaughlin, will be granted $7 million in addition to having sole custody of the former couple’s two children, Brady and Quinn as well as both legal and physical custody.

Kathleen has allegedly been “working tirelessly” and making an effort to “provide a sense of security and normality for the [couple’s] young children,” according to the divorce papers. She does so while requesting to avoid the old home state of Indiana owing to “intense media scrutiny.” The records also claim that she and Fogle’s previous marriage was “irretrievably broken and should be dissolved.”

Per the obtained documents, Jared has not seen his kids in person since August 2015. He requested regular in-person parenting time during incarceration, but Kathleen’s lawyer argued against the request, stating in the divorce filing, “Father is an admitted pedophile and consumer of child pornography. The potential risk that Father poses to the children is both obvious and unacceptable.”

Nonetheless, she has consented to let Jared call the kids and talk to them.

“Obviously, I am extremely shocked and disappointed by the recent developments involving Jared,” Kathleen said in a statement to the media at the time. “I am in the process of seeking a dissolution of the marriage.”

“My focus is exclusively on the well-being of my children,” her statement continued. “Neither I nor my family will have any further comment on the matter. I appreciate respect for my family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

Kathleen also filed a lawsuit in October 2016 alleging Subway knew about her ex’s “depravities” 12 years ago but did little to stop him. Lawyers for Kathleen McLaughlin claim in the lawsuit, which was filed in Hamilton County, Indiana, that Subway received three reports of Jared’s “s*xual interest in and behavior with minors” starting in 2004, but twice only responded by sending a public relations representative to examine Fogle.

According to the lawsuit, Subway acknowledged mishandling a third complaint and added that the restaurant never called the police.

“A year ago I was in shock — my only priority was protecting my children,” Kathleen said, adding that “a lot of questions” have surfaced in the months since.

“I have a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old who ask me about jail and where their father is,” she said. “I will not lie to my kids and as they get older they will ask more questions and I want to answer them.”

Jared was given a 15.6-year prison term after pleading guilty to counts of child s*x and child pornography.
