Jerry Springer was once married to Margaret “Micki” Velten Springer and their marriage produced one daughter named Katie Springer. Micki and Jerry met during a blind date when she asked a co-worker to find her a date so she could go to a movie with her sister and brother-in-law. The friend set her up with Jerry.
“It was the best blind date you could ever imagine,” Katie’s mother told the newspaper then. “He was totally different from anyone else I had ever dated. He was totally uninhibited. I guess it impressed me because I’m so worried about what other people think. Now, I realize that’s just Jerry.”
They tied the knot in 1973. However, Katie’s parents had issues in 1974 when it was discovered he’d solicited prostitutes on more than one occasion. “I realized that I couldn’t live my life with that hanging over my head, so I told my wife and my family, and then I told her family,” he recounted to PEOPLE.
After two years, they gave birth to Katie in 1976. “That’s the end of the sad story,” Jerry told PEOPLE in 1994 of his daughter Katie. “The happy story is that she is a bright, exceptional kid who has really overcome a lot.” “She’s pretty much of a ham,” he added of Katie. ”She probably gets that from me.”
In a 1977 piece that can be found on Newspapers.com, Micki discussed their little daughter Katie. The article says that Jerry Springer was Cincinnati’s mayor at that time.
“I think it is important – at least to me – to be home with Katie in her first years,” Micki told the newspaper. “I did this by choice because of those beliefs. But that doesn’t mean I won’t change later on and do different things.” That article says that Katie “has been blind since birth – diagnosed inoperable – but there lately have been indications she has some visual capability, although the extent is unknown.”
“One of the things I think I am most interested in now, because of our Katie’s handicap, is telling the public how really fine the Cincinnati public school program for the visually handicapped is,” Micki told the Enquirer. “Katie is enrolled in what is called early childhood education for handicapped children. She has home visits every Monday and Thursday by an instructor in this department.”
However, they got divorced in 1994. She was his only wife as he never married again. “My heart just wasn’t in it anymore,” he told PEOPLE at the time.

I’m saying all this because I’m becoming increasingly annoyed with a repeatedly asked question that is rude, offensive, hurtful, and judgmental. Do we miss him? Excuse me? We had to send our son away for his own good. How f’cking dare you ask me such a thing.”
She concluded, “My son deserves better than sitting on the couch with no friends to interact with about ready to jump out of his skin because his high energy system is being caged. And no walks wouldn’t have worked. He’s a pre-teen athlete, not an adult. He also deserves better than seeing his grades sink because his parents aren’t able to thoroughly help him with online schooling. He’s honor roll, he deceives to stay there. I shouldn’t have to explain any of this. We don’t owe anyone an explanation. If you know us at all you know we acted with Ricky’s best interest at heart.”
