Late in 2021, Kayla herself took to her Twitter to finally reveal why she and her husband would no longer be a part of the show. “Sorry everyone, I fought hard to be on Season 4 but ultimately Dustin said he wouldn’t do the show if I came back. I think the little man was intimidated that I could do everything that he did, despite being a woman. I have no regrets for standing up against him. He is a coward”, so yes, in this tweet Dustin is her stepbrother, Dustin Hurts.
Now as for Paul, being the supportive husband that he is, his wife’s clashing with her family is the reason he will also not be returning to the show. Paul was a long-time employee of Kayla’s stepfather.
This revelation, however, should not have come off as too much of a shock to Gold Rush fans as they have been aware of Kayla’s issues with her family.
Even in the past, she spoke about how her working relationship with her stepfather has been “difficult”. Kayla, especially, has never been okay with her family’s traditional outlooks on mining.

According to LinkedIn, Kayla has been working as a full-time administrative office manager/local liaison at Oregon State University’s Extension Service, as of September 2021.
Before that, from May 2019 to September 2021, Kayla was self-employed as a safety and compliance manager at Blue Ribbon Gold, Inc.
In between her leaving Gold Rush and now, Kayla also seemed to have married Paul. The last time we saw her on Gold Rush she was still Paul’s fiancée.

Kayla Sheets lost her late husband Greg to pancreatic cancer in 2014, after a year from being diagnosed.
It’s been more than six years since that incident and Kayla still recalls memories of him and advocates for pancreatic cancer.
Kayla revealed that her late husband wanted others to see the ugly side of cancer in hopes that it may bring some light to this specific disease.
