Kris Kelkar On HBO Max’s Swiping America
Finding true love in New York City is hard enough, plus Kris Kelkar’s gay. So, when he was offered a chance to be a part of HBO Max’s new show, Swiping America, he didn’t think twice.
“This show was a YOLO moment,” he said. “I never thought I’d do anything like this, but I had just been through a rough break up and funnily enough the guy badly wanted to be on TV, so I was kind of feeling the cosmic irony of it all.”
In Swiping America, Kris was flown across the country. In fact, in every episode, he was taken to a new location to meet a potential partner. Thanks to this, Kris now realizes that the gay dating scene varies broadly between the different locations.
“For the gay community, the hookup-oriented kinds of apps like Grindr or Scruff…will show you who is next to you. And in Santa Fe, there were two people in the city, on one of the apps,” he explained. “So, how you find queer spaces and communities to date is super different in some of these cities.”
With his participation, Kris hopes to inspire viewers to take chances. “We all have things that we’re scared to share, and dating is really personal. So, there’s this large narrative out there that if a guy isn’t into you, it’s scorched earth – screw him! And if they don’t respect you, yes. But, the most courageous thing you can do is put yourself out there. Always be open to the unexpected,” he said.
Swiping America, which premiered on June 15, 2023, was filmed in Asheville, Miami, Austin, New Orleans, Santa Fe, Boulder, Seattle, and Honolulu. The goal of the show was to help the cast find a match and let them connect naturally.
