Viewers of Welcome to Plathville recently learned that before marrying Kim Plath and having 9 children, Barry Plath was married to someone else. His first wife’s name is Laurie Mack.
A legal document that appeared to show that Barry had a prior marriage was posted on Instagram by blogger Katie Joy of Without a Crystal Ball. She added a lengthy commentary that provides additional details about the unnamed marriage and the reality star’s past. The article begins, “Barry Plath is no stranger to divorce,” and goes on to say that Barry wedded his first wife Laurie in 1990.
“By 1991, the couple moved to Tallahassee, Florida,” Katie continued, adding that by 1994, Barry and his first wife had filed for divorce, “citing irreconcilable differences as the reason.”
“The couple had no children and their divorce settlement had Barry responsible for paying off one of Laurie’s student loans,” the caption claims, noting that in 1997, Barry wed his second wife, Kim. “The marriage was Kim’s first,” the post claims. As reported Barry’s first wife now resides in Minnesota where Barry grew up.
Katie agrees, saying “Barry had NEVER brought up his previous marriage.” She asserts that Barry wasn’t raised as a fundamentalist and that he didn’t start attending church until he moved to Florida with Laurie.
Now, Barry and Kim are also divorced now. After 24 years of marriage, the Welcome to Plathville actors confirmed their separation in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.
“After considerable thought and discussion, we have decided to end our marriage,” said Kim and Barry. “While this was not an easy decision, we know it’s the best choice for both of us. We have been through many highs and lows in our 24 years of marriage and as we navigate this new chapter in our lives, we will co-parent our amazing children.”
Season 4 of Welcome to Plathville has focused on Kim and Barry’s marriage, including their choices to divorce and live apart.
“I can’t help but feel a little betrayed,” Barry said in a June 2022 episode. “One thing I thought wouldn’t ever be shaken was us. Now it’s totally shaken up. It’s just really sad. It’s a tragedy.”
In a confessional, he added, “I look at her and I see a woman who feels trapped. I have bought flowers and bought presents, but I’m still an optimist hoping that she’ll change.”
