Late comedian Michael Lehrer’s partner started a GoFundMe after the comedian’s untimely death. According to GoFundMe, he passed away on 17 January 2023 after a 7-year battle with ALS. The description on the fundraiser read, “He wanted his son, Colin to be ok financially when he left this world. Please help honor Michael and show him how much we loved him by making sure his son can be secure for a while.”

Colette who also spoke to Chicago Sun-Times told, “Michael died with dignity on his own terms … Medical aid in dying was the hardest decision he ever made.”

ALS Association describes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is “an always fatal neurodegenerative disease in which a person’s brain loses connection with the muscles.” The disease usually strikes those between the ages of 40 and 70, and those affected will “lose their ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe.”

After receiving a diagnosis of the neurological disease in 2017, the performer—a member of The Second City troupe—kept up with his work. According to Deadline, Lehrer has given wheelchair-accessible performances in clubs in Austin, Texas, and had discussed his health struggles both during his performances and on the podcast Kill Tony.

In 2014, Lehrer appeared in the New Faces of Comedy program at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. Chris Witaske and Tawny Newsome, two actors who worked with him at The Second City, both paid tribute to their late coworker on social media.

Four original sketch revues were produced with help from Michael, including Sky’s The Limit (Weather Permitting), which won the Jeff Award for Best Revue. His decade long freelance practice has allowed him to work on a wide range of projects. He has designed logos, posters, brochures, packaging, books, catalogs and websites.

Furthermore, his work has been featured in several books including design historian Steven Heller’s The Design Entrepreneurs (Rockport Press, 2008), Typography Sketchbooks (Princeton Architectural Press, 2011) and Gestalten’s Fully Booked: Ink on Paper (2013). He is also the winner of a 2013 National Silver Addy Award for his State of America print series.
