Throughout the whole competition, Clay Hayes lost over 18 kgs. Despite his weakness, Clay survived his encounters with a mountain lion, grizzly bears, and a fisher. He even killed a young mule deer buck with his bow, foraged wild mushrooms and berries, and caught fishes in the show.
With the prize money, Clay plans to pay off his house mortgage and save some for his kids to go to college when they grow up.
Talking about his personal life, Clay married his wife Elizabeth Schultz Hayes on August 23, 2003. Reportedly, the two knew each other since they were both 17 years old.
Celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary (and 21 years of togetherness), Elizabeth shared some of her pictures with her husband Clay from their wedding day on Facebook. On Father’s Day, on June 18, 2018, Elizabeth shared a picture of her and Clay and wrote, “Happy Father’s Day to this hot guy we love you! Clay Hayes.”
The adorable couple also has two kids (sons) from their marriage, named Coye and Fen, who turned 13 and 10 years old respectively in 2022.
On Coye’s 11th birthday, Elizabeth shared a picture of Coye and Fen standing behind Coye’s birthday cake. “From a premie to 7 years old overnight wishing this not so little guy a very Happy Birthday,” Elizabeth wrote on Fen’s 7th birthday.

Elizabeth Hayes’ husband makes his living by crafting bows and filming the process. Also a wildlife biologist, Clay worked in some of the most remote and beautiful landscapes in the lower 48. However, he followed his true passion which is archery professionally in 2017.
Clay received education from Pace High School, Pensacola Junior College, and the University of West Florida. In 2007, he graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor’s degree in wildlife science.
