Who Are Emma Broyles Parents?
Emma Broyles was born to her parents, Julie and Ron Broyles. They both hail from Anchorage, Alaska, but her mother also inherits the Korean roots. So, this made Emma the first woman of Korean descent to be named Miss America.
But though Emma may be proud of her roots now, she e struggled to embrace her heritage throughout her childhood. In an interview with Anchorage Daily News, Emma even admitted that she went to great lengths to “look more white.”
“I never really felt like I saw anybody who looked like me, and I hated the fact that I was Korean,” she explained. However, her perspective completely changes doing her high school years. After meeting a group of Korean-American schoolmates, Emma remembers feeling like she could really embrace the culture and be herself.
Now, the Miss America celebrates her Korean background with pride.
On Koren American day 2022, Emma posted on her IG, “Today is National Korean American Day! Today we celebrate the arrival of Korea’s first immigrants to America and the contributions of the Korean American community to the United States.” She also took the time to praise the efforts of her Korean grandparents who immigrated to the US to live the American dream.

Emma Broyles’s mother Julie Broyles is a first-generation American. Her parents, Myung “Sarah” Kim and Boo Yul “Paul” Kim, came to America in the early 70s right before Julie was born — with hopes that their kids to be able to live that American Dream and have every opportunity possible.
And now, their granddaughter is Miss America. It’s indeed a dream come true.
Sadly, Julie’s grandparents, Chang Yup “Lucy” Kim, and her husband have long passed away.

But it was only after her mother enrolled Brendan in their local Special Olympics chapter, Emma realized that her brother was “a little bit different from the other kids.” The realization also gave her “almost maternal instinct, this sibling instinct,” to look out for him and to make sure that he had the same opportunities as she did.
Now, Emma works with her mother at the Special Olympics. Infact, she’s been volunteering with the organization for over a decade.
“As a sibling of an individual with an intellectual disability and Special Olympics athlete, I have witnessed the positive impact Special Olympics has on the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, their families, and communities,” she said.
