Meet John Bean, Litzi Botello Husband

National Geographic’s Port Protection documented the life of the people residing in harsh climates and topography in Alaska. Although the life that they were living looked fun and attainable, living in the wilderness certainly isn’t a piece of cake. The show which first aired in 2015 is in its fifth season.

Litzi Botello and her husband John Bean were one of the couples living their life in Port Protection. They met each other when Litzi was in her early ’20s and met John while living in Los Angeles. The couple shared their wedding vows in May 2000 and decided to head to Alaska to spend the rest of their life.

John and Litzi were happily married ever since.

Litzi, who was a one-armed Mexican woman, was skilled and had survived the Port Protection for over 40 years. She loved creating Fimo arts.

Sadly, Litzi Botello has died. Fans took notice of her missing on the recent shows, without knowing about her death. In a Facebook group, a fan asked about Litzi and said, “I have missed seeing her. Love to watch her fillet fish.” Litzi’s husband John replied that his wife had died of ovarian cancer.

She reportedly passed away on 25 June 2021 at the age of 62.

Her family added that she “enjoyed beachcombing and just walking on the beach; listening to good music, especially live music; talking to strangers; traveling with her husband in their van; supporting women in any way possible; spreading love.”

Before her death, Litzi also lost her good friend Gary Muehlberger who she knew for 40 years. John opened up in the comment that Gary died three months before Litzi. On that unfortunate day of losing her friend, Litzi visited her doctor for surgery for her ovarian cancer.

How Many Sons Did John Bean And Litzi Botello Have?

John Bean and Litzi Botello had two sons: Jhonny Duarte Botello and Leland Caulder Botello Bean. His oldest son Leland was born on 26 June 1991 whereas the youngest son Jhonny was born on 28 June 1996.

Before his wife’s death, John also had to endure the pain of losing his two sons for an unnatural cause. His oldest son Leland passed away on 10 July 2017. However, the reason behind Leland’s death is a mystery. He lost his youngest son Jhonny because of an accident with a logging truck.

Jhonny suffered a brain injury, multiple fractures to the left femur, a jaw fracture, along with multiple scrapes and abrasions.

Furthermore, doctors put Jhonny in a medically induced coma to perform Cerebral Angiogram to determine the extent of the brain injury. He was a college valedictorian who graduated in 2014. He also knew carpentry and was hired as a full-time worker.

Litzi wrote on a Mother’s Day blog in 2019: “Both my sons were always trying to get me out hiking more. Both were avid hikers and hunters.”

The pain of losing all of his family members must be unimaginable for John.

John Bean hails from Minnesota. He is the son of Robert Sutherland Bean and his wife Diane Bean. His parents married in 1948 in Minneapolis, moving to Duluth in 1955.

Robert was a member of the Masonic Order, Scottish Rite, the Aad Temple of Duluth Chanters, and the Eastern Star. He was President of Bean & Hill Consulting Engineers and was a member of the Duluth Professional Engineers.
