Who Are Kristen Kish Parents?
Chef Kristen Kish was born in South Korea but she was adopted by a family from Kentwood, Michigan who are her adoptive parents Judy and Michael Kish.
When she first started watching cooking shows as a young girl, she was fascinated by the culinary industry. Kish experienced a predominantly white male-run restaurant business, as did many other people who grew up in the 1990s. Emeril Lagasse and Mario Batali were frequent TV guests. Kish understood what she wanted to do from the age of 7 and was intuitively making burgers with handmade kimchi, despite the fact that she had never seen somebody who looked like her in charge of a kitchen.
Kish (who attended culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago) had only ever worked at male-owned or -run establishments before to joining Lynch, first as a sous chef at Stir in 2011.
“I definitely hadn’t been exposed to what it was like to work for a woman. It certainly changed me. My perspective changed,” Kish told TODAY Food. “Until I worked for Barbara, I was struggling with a lot of things — personal or professional.”
“She told me, ‘I don’t need to teach you how to cook. You know how to cook. I’m here to challenge the way you think about yourself.’”
Despite having worked at a number of renowned restaurants relatively early in her career, the chef admitted that it has been difficult to discover her voice. She battled with drugs, alcohol, and her own sexuality in her early life. Kristen claimed that despite her talent and attainment of some of the highest places in her field, she lacked confidence.
“I was insecure, nervous, and unsure of who I was as a person. Barbara was the one who told me I had to go on ‘Top Chef.’ I will never forget her saying that to me: ‘We need more women on TV,'” Kristen recalled, adding that she was reluctant at first, but finally agreed. She went on to become the second woman to win the award-winning series hosted by Padma Lakshmi.
The renowned chef claimed that although the media praised her achievement as the second woman and the first Asian American woman to win the competition, she ran against problems when she went back to work in Boston.
“This is the first time I say it out loud. A particular male chef in the city I was living started running his mouth that I slept with him to further my career. I never worked for him a day in my life and I’m also very gay,” Judy said. “It’s a way of making woman feel less than. It’s just so disappointing — can’t someone just be happy, rather than taking the thunder? That was the first hit of major reality.”

Judy Kish is the mother of Kristen Kish. She is the daughter of the late A D Adams and Jane Rotzien. Her dad was born on May 2, 1925, in Stamford, Texas, to Edgar and Nora (Utley) Adams. As a youngster, A D moved with his family to Buchanan where he was a notable athlete on the football field. At age 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and fought in the Pacific Theater during WW2.
After the war, A D found the love of his life, Jane Rotzien and they were married on October 26, 1946. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion where he held several different offices. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and most of all watching the Detroit Tigers baseball and MSU football games.
A D had seven siblings James Adams, Lonnie Adams, Lee Frank Speckine, Billy Don Speckine, Mary Koroch, Marie Beatty, and Pat Zelasko.
