While instructing a lesson at the local Latter-day Saints Church near Melanie’s home base of Gilbert, Arizona, in October 2018, Lori and Melanie first met. They hit it off right away. She introduced Lori to the well-known end-times author and speaker Chad Daybell when they agreed to attend a religious conference together in St. George, Utah because they had grown so close in just a few short weeks.
Despite the fact that they were both married, Melanie saw their first attraction and how they finally became a couple, but she refrained from interfering because their friendship had also grown.
Melanie and Lori did everything together, from attending more conferences to producing faith-based podcasts to getting to know one another better, but everything changed in late 2019. This is due to Lori’s claim that JJ, her 7-year-old son, was with Melanie when police arrived at her house on November 26 to check on his welfare at Kay and Larry Woodcock’s request.
As if that weren’t enough, Melanie claimed that Lori and her new husband Chad then tried to persuade her to keep up this deception in order to protect them, which surprised and embarrassed Melanie in every way.
Melanie claims that Lori once referred to JJ and her missing 16-year-old daughter Tylee as “zombies” to her, which made her think there was probably a lot more to the tale than she realized. On December 6, 2019, she contacted the local police to reveal both the couple’s alleged deception and the fact that they previously informed her they were on a mission to purge the globe of “zombies.”
Despite her own admittedly radical views, Melanie had never really embraced their ideologies. However, she was now really terrified since she thought real lives appeared to be at grave risk.

Where Is Melanie Gibb Today?
In August 2020, it was shared reported that Melanie had also recorded a call a couple of months after Lori’s kids went missing which was played at the preliminary hearing of Chad Daybell. In the call, Lori tells Gibb that her son, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, is “safe and happy” but that she cannot tell anyone where he is because various people are after her. Investigators believe JJ and his sister, Tylee Ryan, 16, had been dead for months by that point, buried on Chad’s property by Lori’s brother, Alex Cox, shortly after they were last seen in September.
Investigators said Melanie stayed at Lori’s house during a crucial period during which JJ was last seen in September. Melanie testified that Lori was taking care of JJ on the night of Sept. 22 while Gibb, Lori, and Gibb’s boyfriend recorded an episode of their podcast, “Time to Warrior Up,” between 9 p.m. and after midnight.
“[Alex] carried [JJ] and he was asleep,” Melanie testified of the last time she saw JJ. The next morning when she woke up and went downstairs to speak with Lori, she did not see the boy.
“I saw [Chad] as the hand and [Lori] as the puppet on that hand,” Melanie once said. “They were both like gasoline and fire. Not a good match. But equally destructive to each other. So in a way, they were equal matches, in that they were destructive to each other. They both had deception in them.”
“Part of me is processing; ‘I can’t believe you’re friends with these people,'” Melanie told NBC’s ‘Dateline’ in 2020. “The other part of me is like, ‘How did you even believe any of the things they shared to you?'”
It’s important to note that Lori’s attorneys claimed in 2020 that her former best friend and her then-boyfriend, David Warwick, were “eagerly involved” in JJ and Tylee’s final fate, but there hasn’t been any proof of this.
