School of Chocolate is Netflix’s new food-themed competition reality TV show. The contestants in School of Chocolate did not only make delicious chocolate dishes but also other interesting stuff like illusion pastry, edible showpiece, chocolate sculptures, and so on.
French pastry chef Amaury Guichon is the host, teacher, and judge on the show. The contestants will learn tips and tricks of the chocolate trade and try to impress Amaury with their skills. The one winner of the show recieved $50 thousand prize money and an opportunity to teach a masterclass in Amaury’s pastry school in Las Vegas.
The eight chefs participating in the show were Juan Gutierrez, Amanda Miller, Cedrick Simpson, Daniel Joseph Corpuz, Stephanie Norcio, Thiago Silva, Tyricia Clark, and Mellisa Root.
Mellisa is a “chocolatier”, a pastry chef, and a food consultant, with 20 years of experience. To see how she performed in the show, fans had to watch the show. But Mellisa was very determined to win the cash prize.
When asked what was the most challenging part of the show, Mellisa said, “The show challenged me to not second-guess myself, and to make decisions and press forward with conviction…there was no time to second-guess! I found it a truly growing opportunity. When you weed away doubt, great things can happen.”

She is the executive pastry chef at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia. She is also the owner of Mellisa Root Chocolates and Confections and a Freelance pastry chef consultant.
Mellisa started her chocolatier career with a job at Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort. She then joined River Oaks Country Club in Texas and worked there for about four years. In her almost 20 years of pastry chef career, she has worked for Payard Patisserie Caesars Palace, Rosewood Sandhill/Madera Restaurant, M Resort, etc.
Mellisa has also worked for Thomas Keller Restaurant Group in Manhattan and The Hairy Lobster in Portland, Oregon. She opened The Hairy Lobster with her husband.
Mellisa studied pastry at California College of the Arts and in California Culinary Academy. She was trained by great pastry chefs like Ewald Notter, Michael Joy, Wiener Heitz, Jacquey Pfeiffer, and most importantly by Darrin Aoyama, the Pastry World Champion.
Mellisa has represented the United States at the 2008 World Culinary Olympiad. Her team went on to win several gold medals. In 2013, she won StarChefs Rising Star Hotel Pastry Chef Award.
For the young girls who want to be chefs of anything else, Mellisa advises to “find a way to make living” with what they want to do.
