Miles Johnson Job
Miles Johnson loved Denim for as long as he could remember. Every year from about the age of 5, he would get a new pair of 5-pocket jeans. He said they would usually last a year, from all the climbing trees, exploring, camping, roller-skating, and occasional fishing trips. His interest in fashion came from my parents who liked to dress up for going out with friends.
He would watch the transformation and feel the excitement before they would leave the house which made him realize what a costume could do for someone’s appearance.
Miles debuted his career at the costume house Angels + Bermans where he learned to work with vintage. He spent several years in Hollywood, working on numerous films and with period costumes. But in 1997, he came to Paul Smith, a British fashion designer.
Upon recognizing his talent, Paul took him under his wings where he worked for him for nearly a year. Then he returned to the UK to join St. Martin’s College in 1998. He graduated with MA in Fashion/Apparel Design, Distinction in 2000. Then, he was immersed in the world of Denim.
Miles started working for Levi Strauss Europe heading the creative effort behind Red Tab Jeans. Then, several years later after taking up the direction of Levi’s Vintage Clothing in 2003, he moved to Amsterdam along with the entire new division of Levi’s XX in 2009. He had joined Levi Strauss as Head Designer and in May 2011, he started working as Design Director.
Talking about the inspiration, Miles shared, “I don’t find it hard to get inspired and feed the creativity. There are so many sources of visual stimulation. It might be looking to see what a clothing brand you like has done or looked at a painting or take a trip. I always get some much from looking at people. If you know the best places to visit, where people generally wear more progressive looks, you can pick up so many ideas. I also love to look at fabrics. It can make your imagination run wild with ideas for new styles”
After leaving Levi’s in March 2014, he started working for Patagonia as Creative Director in April 2014. Until April 2017, he created a structured textile department, set up and designed additional design studio space and shared, creative work environment, oversaw all Graphics, illustration, and branding, and arranged Patagonia’s sales launch fashion shows.
Furthermore, from May 2017 to December 2017, Miles served as Senior Creative Director of Product Design and Development and contributed to the growth of the business from $600 million to $1 billion. In June 2018, he started The Johnson Design Consultancy Limited where he has been working as a creative consultant.
