The way Nailyah delivered it was flawless. Ritchie, Perry, and Bryan were astounded. Serenity’s performance, according to judge Lionel Richie, made him think of Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. “You’ve got it, girl,” added judge Katy.
“Your whole approach was like, ‘I’m fixing to stop traffic with this. I’m going to make people watch me,'” judge Luke admired the audition. “…And that’s what this business is.” She has previously tried out for the show. When she was barely 17 years old, she once went on an audition but didn’t get very far.
“…Looking back, I was not ready,” Nailyah told WJCL. The native of Savannah who now resides in Charlotte attributes the development of her singing abilities to her upbringing in the church.
“My family is mainly in Savannah, Georgia so a part of me grew up at First Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church,” she said. “My entire family sings so it started there, in my blood.”
