Meet Neneki Lee, Laphonza Butler Wife
Neneki Lee is the wife of Laphonza Butler, president of Emily’s List and who filled in Diane Feinstein’s vacated Senate seat. The married couple has been together at least since 2009. However, they intend to keep their personal life details away from the public eye.
However, we know that the couple are parents to one daughter Nylah, who is 8 years old.
44-year-old Laphonza is the first openly gay senator from California. Her career has spanned the business, intellectual, governmental, and labor spheres. She worked for Airbnb as director of public policy and campaigns before joining Emily’s List, an organization that promotes the election of women to public office.
Prior to that, she was a partner at the political consulting firm SCRB Strategies, which is now Bearstar Strategies, and had as clients former Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf and then-Sen. Kamala Harris as well as Newsom. Ace Smith, Sean Clegg, and Juan Rodriguez, three seasoned strategists for the governor, oversee the business.
Laphonza also presided over the Service Employees International Union Local 2015 for more than ten years, which represents more than 325,000 nursing facility and home care workers in California. The biggest union in California and the biggest local in the nation that represents long-term care workers is SEIU Local 2015. She served as a key adviser on the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris as well.
Laphonza was chosen by Governor Jerry Brown to serve as a UC regent in 2018, a position she maintained until 2021. She has been on the boards of the Bay Area Economic Council Institute think tank, BlackPAC, and the Children’s Defense Fund, a national organization that advocates for children. She served as a former member of the board of governors for the Federal Reserve System of Los Angeles.
The newly elected senator from California also presided over SEIU Local 2015, a labor organization that represents more than 325,000 nursing home and home care workers throughout the state. Prior to that, she served for seven years as the President of SEIU United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW).
Laphonza also oversaw the welfare of janitors, security guards, food service employees, and others around the country as the Director of SEIU’s Property Services Division. Laphonza Butler served as the SEIU California State Council’s president as well as SEIU International’s vice president. She has served on the boards of the Bay Area Economic Council Institute, BLACK PAC, and the National Children’s Defense Fund.
Laphonza earned her political science bachelor’s degree at Jackson State University, a historically Black university, where, in 2021, she told The Times’ Mark Z. Barabak that she was motivated by her professors, many of whom had participated in the civil rights movement.
After working as a labor organizer for nurses in Baltimore and Milwaukee, janitors in Philadelphia, and hospital employees in New Haven, Connecticut, Laphonza relocated to California in 2009.
