Adding to the baking show range on Netflix is Is It Cake?. Is It Cake? that dropped on 18 March 2022 however is not exactly a cooking show like most baking shows that ask bakers to create beautiful cakes that look like, well, cakes. Nine amazing cake artists are brought in to assemble hyper-realistic cakes that look like everyday items in the hopes of fooling the judges each round. Nina Maria Charles, whom we are going to talk about in the rest of this writing is one of them.
Nina Maria Charles On Netflix’s Is It Cake?
Being on TV was never a goal for baker Nina Maria Charles going into the year, but she was for sure excited when approached with the opportunity.
The filming of Is It Cake? lasted about four weeks and she felt blessed to be able to put her amazing cakes on display on such a great platform. (Of course) she was elated to meet an actor from her favorite show. She said one of the episodes she competed in actually had one of the actors from Narcos, her favorite show.
“My favorite part was meeting everyone. Great celebrity judges and making the long-lasting friends that I have now”, Nina recalled smiling.
However, after a fierce final battle, it was Andrew Fuller who was declared the winner of the first-ever Is It Cake?.
In the finale, titled “Winner Fakes All” the winner beat out fellow finalists Hemu Basu and April Julian in the challenge.
Nina, on the other hand, though she did not win the first prize, was not sent home empty-handed.
In the “Cake Or Cash” round, fellow baker Jonny Manganello bagged $10,000 and Nina won $5,000.
Nina Maria Charles Career
So, this way, what started as a small passion project landed Nina national recognition.
She grew up liking cakes but not regarding herself as much of a baker. Some of her fondest baking memories came around her birthday when her mother and aunts would bake cakes from scratch. So, when her brother had his first child, her godchild, she wanted to continue that family tradition. She went ahead and baked a cake. But it turned out to be an “absolute disaster”.
Embarrassed Nina felt like she was going to redeem herself the next year. She decided to study and figure out how to do fondant cakes and all “other stuff” in baking.
So, when a Snoopy cake came out amazing, she posted it and everybody started asking and it became a business, which now has the name of Nina Bakes Cakes.
Her cake business offers a variety of desserts including wedding cakes, tasting boxes, cookies, decorated cakes, cake bouquets, cake bowls, and hyper-realistic cakes. Also, when Charles is not baking she runs her food truck Nina Creole, known for the creole eggrolls and lobster corndogs.
