Robert Abernethy Job

Robert Abernethy is a wildlife biologist from South Carolina. He grew up hunting and fishing especially while spending his summer on his grandfather’s farm in North Carolina. Yet, he had never seen a wild turkey till he was an adult. Yet, decades later, Robert led the charge for the National Wild Turkey Federation in a successful quest to restore the wild turkey throughout North America.

For his contributions toward the restoration of wild turkey and wildlife habitat conservation, Robert received the NWTF’s Henry S. Mosby Award on 16 February 2013 at the annual NWTF Convention and Sport Show. Robert, who first harvested a turkey while completing his doctorate studies in Louisiana more than 37 years ago, can now boast of seeing wild turkeys in all 48 continental states plus Hawaii, including on his grandfather’s property in eastern North Carolina.

His major initiatives were; the relocation (trap and transfer) of wild turkeys throughout the continent for the NWTF; the development of a timber stewardship program with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service that allows the NWTF to harvest timber and use the proceeds on forest management projects and the growth of the NWTF’s staff of wildlife biologists from four to more than 50.

Furthermore, Robert is also served as the president of Longleaf Alliance (since September 2012), a nonprofit organization based in Alabama that focuses on planting longleaf pines – an ideal habitat for wildlife, including wild turkeys and a good crop for landowners. He oversees all Alliance activities in the 9-state range of the Longleaf Pine.

Additionally, Robert has worked all over the US and Canada on projects as varied as waterfowl and wetlands research, wild turkey restoration, and habitat restoration of Louisiana marshes, bottomland hardwood forests, Carolina bays, oak savannahs, and longleaf pine forests.
