On Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville, Florida, a white gunman opened fire inside a Dollar General store, killing three Black people (two men and one woman). Then he shot himself to death. The shooter has been identified as Ryan Palmeter. The shooting, according to the authorities, was racially motivated.

According to the authorities, Ryan left his parents’ home in Clay County, Florida, around 11:40 on Saturday and traveled toward Jacksonville in the following county. The shooter was identified as Ryan Christopher Palmeter by law police. They added that he was carrying a Glock pistol and an AR-15-style rifle, all of which were lawfully acquired in Florida.

At 1:18 p.m., Ryan’s father received a text message from his son instructing him to check his computer. T.K. Waters, the sheriff of Jacksonville, claimed that Ryan had written many manifestos, including ones for his parents, the media, and federal authorities. These manifestos included information about the shooter’s “disgusting ideology of hate,” according to Sheriff Waters.

Ryan used the N-word often in his manifestos, according to Sheriff T.K. Waters. “They were, quite frankly, writings of a madman,” Waters said Sunday on “Good Morning America.” “They [included] the rather liberal use of the N-word, several times. It was clear that his crimes were motivated by wanting to shoot Black people.”

Angela Michelle Carr, 52, was shot while driving, store employee A.J. Laguerre, 19, was wounded as he attempted to run, and client Gerrald Gallion, 29, was shot as he entered the store on Saturday, according to Sheriff Waters.

According to authorities, Ryan entered the business clad in a tactical vest and equipped with a revolver and an AR-15-style weapon bearing swastika markings. Before the shooting started, the gunman reportedly commanded “all the non-Black people to get out” of the store, according to Florida State Representative Angie Nixon. Before turning the gun on himself, he shot three people dead.

The incident is being looked at by the authorities as a possible hate crime.

The gunman participated in an unnamed domestic call in 2016, and the authorities examined him for mental illness in 2017, according to the officials. The outcomes of that investigation were unknown. Drawings of swastikas may be seen on at least one of the shooter’s firearms in photos of them taken by the police.

According to Sheriff Waters, the shooter’s parents did not own the guns.

The shooter was spotted on the campus of the nearby historically Black Edward Waters University before moving on to the Dollar General, according to the sheriff. According to a statement issued by Edward Waters University, a male who was not recognized appeared on campus on Saturday and was asked to leave after refusing to identify himself to a security guard.

Prior to this event, police reported that a domestic call to his house in 2016 did not result in an arrest. He was briefly detained for emergency medical care under Florida’s Baker Act provision a year later. As she spoke to the crowd, Donna Deegan, the mayor of Jacksonville, sobbed.

“It feels some days like we’re going backward,” she said.

“I’ve heard some people say that some of the rhetoric that we hear doesn’t really represent what’s in people’s hearts, it’s just the game. It’s just the political game,” Donna said. “Those three people who lost their lives, that’s not a game.”
