Saku Chandrasekara did not have access to an oven and baking until she moved to the United Kingdom in 18. So, not in a million years did she think she would be selected to go into the Bake Off tent. It was just a “tiny dream” by the time she submitted her application and was not sure if it would come true. But she had the phone call, and felt like she was going to explode, with happiness of course!

When Saku Chandrasekara was finally allowed to talk about her participation in the Great British Bake Off 2023, she took to her social media to write “SURPRISE…🤩! I am super excited to tell you all that I will be coming to your living rooms ON THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF 2023 with my lovely Bake Off family🍰👩🍳.”
Then, when they started recording the show, Saku also revealed her story. She said her family home in Sri Lanka, did not have an oven so she turned to baking only when she moved with her husband to the UK in 2003. Later, when she became mum, she was rustling up treats for her children’s lunchboxes by replicating the snacks she saw in the supermarket. And just like that, she self-taught herself to become a whiz in baking.
To the cameras, Saku also shared stories related to the traditional flavors of her heritage. The fan-favorite spoke highly about the curry spices. She claimed that these can make the best pie fillings and discussed how the liberal sprinklings of cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg found their way into her sweeter bakes. Saku also told viewers about her homegrown vegetable patch.
For Saku, the winner of the “Technical Challenge Week”, the most wonderful memory of GBBO is about meeting fellow bakers, coming from all stages of life with a common passion for baking, the big white tent, meeting the crew, their love, support, and encouraging words. She said all of it will never leave her memory.
So, like that, Saku was able to capture the hearts of viewers around the UK, with her “joyful” personality. So much so, that some even joked that they would “die for her” and many backed her to win the trophy. After the baker wowed judges with her biscuits last night, viewers took to Twitter to express their support for her. Some described Saku as “the human version of joy and sunshine”.
The Week 2 episode saw the bakers tackle biscuits in a signature, technical, and showstopper challenge, and when it was Saku’s turn she created Sicilian-inspired sandwich biscuits and managed to impress the judges. They thought her biscuits were “very pretty”.
After Week 3, Saku was still in the competition. She had been lucky thus far unlike Amos, who became the first baker of the season to leave, and another baker Keith, the second one to do that.
Through her time on the show, Saku also grew closer to many including Nick with whom she promoted “The Great British Bake Off: Kitchen Classics” cookbook.
